WSR Table Tennis; why is Nintendo afraid to let you move your character?

I am loving WSR. My favorites are the archery, sword slicing competition and table tennis. But the table tennis could be so much better if they let you control the characters movement. How difficult could that be to implement into the game? It is like Nintendo just wants to make baby steps with game design; yeah, give them excellent motion control, but dont let them move on their own, we just cant have that.

Firstly, the simplicity of movement lets you focus on the type of shot you are performing. This makes it much more accessable, which is probably what Nintendo was after.

Secondly, the playing area isnt as big as the tennis court in the original Wii Sports, so allowing the player to physically move the Mii wouldnt have an awful lot of point.

I kind of agree with you in principle, though. I really wish the showdown game in sword play let you control the Mii, too. Maybe they will do another Links Crossbow Training type of game with that option (or, hell, the full Zelda ;) )

You could only move like two steps to the left or right for most shots anyway. But even in regular tennis, I don't mind not having to control movement because the character does exactly what I would do anyway.

Basketball, on the other hand.... I've never liked basketball games, but it would be a good option for people who do.

would be a good option... but would probably be hard to judge moving forward and backward to hit some shots. its frustrating sometimes when you're pushed to one side though and instead of moving back your player kinda hangs around and then rolls sideways :?. table tennis is still my favorite game though!

To make the game as accessible as possible.

Plus, in Grand Slam Tennis you have the option to use the nunchuck or let the computer move you and it's almost universally agreed that its better to let the computer move you.

moving the character is much more unnecessary for table tennis then it was for tennis, all that would do is hinder the accesibilty, this isn't mean to be a table tennis sim after all. Also I think it would get annoying having to compensate for the nunchuks wire when doing you swing. Definitely a good choice for the computer to handle what would be very simple movements.

100 percent disagree. Controlling the character movement is much preferred in GST. Do you want the game to play itself? I sure would like to see Rockstar Table Tennis come back with M+ controls. I guess i just want more control over what i am doing, otherwise it only seems like half a game.

I agree with Videodogg - I much prefer to control the player in GST or Virtua Tennis - half the fun (and skill) to me (especially multiplayer) is anticipating your opponents return, or trying to force them to play a certain direction by your positioning. I don't mind as much in WSR table tennis... but I would love to see a full table tennis retail game with this racket control and full player movement.

There's too little space to move anywhere in Table Tennis, so it wasn't necessary. In real Table Tennis, you mostly just need to lunge in a direction and stretch you arm out to hit a ball that may require such movement. The auto-moving helps to take care of the rare moments when running is necessary.

For Wii Sports Tennis, Nintendo was just introducing the Wii Remote and wanted to focus on the one-handed swing movements. If Tennis was reintroduced in Wii Sports Resort, it would make more sense to allow movement with the Nunchuk. We already have a lot of tennis games that allow nunchuk movement, so it's all good.
