Hi, so I've been seeing a lot of discussion about these two games around here... and I have absolutely no idea what they're about or anything, I only know that they're RPGs. Can you please explain, and tell me what the difference between these two games are, are they related to each other in any way? Which one do you like more?

The only way that they're related is that they're RPGs, owned by Nintendo(not developed), and were part of Operation Rainfall. From what I've seen/heard, Xenoblade looks to be the better game but I'm interested in playing both.

Why is it called Operation "rainfall," what what is this operation?

Operation Rainfall was an attempt by fans to have Xenoblade, Last Story, and Pandora's Tower localized in North America. There are almost no similarities between the games other than being JRPGs published by Nintendo. I hear Xenoblade is the best of the bunch though.

Could Xenoblade be considered developed by Nintendo I mean Monolith Soft is first party and they are owned by Nintendo.

Monolith is owned by Nintendo, but they aren't an in house developer. So I guess that would make it 2nd party?

They should. I'm really baffled that some people straight up said that it was a disgrace that Gamespot didn't pick Zelda as their Wii GOTY and instead picked XC with their main argument that a Nintendo game always beat a non Nintendo game. All I could do was sit and stare baffled thinking "Wait!, Monolith Soft is a Nintendo dev and XC is a Nintendo game so why are people angry that Gamespot didn't pick a Nintendo game for their Wii GOTY when they in fact did pick a Nintendo game for their Wii GOTY".

Sorry for the rant I just had to get that out of my chest. :P

Neither is Intelligent Systems, they operate on their own.

IMO if you are 100% owned by a company you are 100% a part of that company and answers for said company.

I am more excited about Xenoblade, simply because it is the one I have read/heard the most about.

I don't think IS is considered first party either. Though, honestly I don't know what the exact definition of 2nd party vs 1st oarty.

You're on a game site, how is it possible that you're unable to find this info out without making a post?

You have to explain this one

IS are as much first party as Monolith, Retro and HAL. Monolith had several developers helping out in other Nintendo games such as SS. They are 100% owned by Nintendo.

Developers like Monster Games are second party. They aren't owned by Nintendo, but currently only make games for Nintendo/ ordered by Nintendo.

im looking forward to last story...i hope its ace. but xenoblade is going to take some beating. the more i progress the more i think "yup...this is the best game on the wii...no exceptions". it just keeps on going and keeps on giving and its just awesome. not perfect...i can pick flaws if anyone would like to know. but, like a flawed sports car (yknow..some that like to randomly catch fire :P), its just so friggin awesome it just doesnt matter.

Well it's usually under a contract of sorts. If Nintendo owns a studio, it is first-party whether it's in Texas or Kyoto. Second party is when a studio enters into a contract to develop for a publisher exclusively for (usually) some amount of time or for a certain number of games, like Bungie was to Microsoft, or Silicon Knights was to Nintendo.
