Because rentals are about 20 bucks. People can go to blockbuster and rent all the games they have there and pay cash and never return with the games. They are not trying to lose money so now if u rent a game and try to steal it, they will take 50 bucks out of the credit card to pay for the game plus the 20 dollar rental
I know they do that for next gen games. I rented a 360 game a couple months ago ($8 for 5 days) and they misplaced the game after I returned it. I was charged full price for the game. Luckily they found it a week later and I was refunded a $1 and some change short over what they hit my card for. I took that as a sign never to rent games from them ever again.Â

Rentals at Hollywood Video are $7 for 5 days. I've never had any problems renting games, but I've always returned them and handed them to a person when I bring them back.

I just go to family video and pay cash there, never had a prob. But I did hear that for new customers renting the next gen games you had to basically give then 50 dollars and once you rented worth the 50 they'd give it back to you or something like that. I guess most places are doing this with newer people to save themselves from getting robbed, which is understandable.

Sucks for you, but good for them.
I use to work there and the way kids(mainly kids played them) handled video games was just pitiful. i am sure BB had to lose money after the games got so scratched up that BB had to repurchase more for the store.
Now, by using the cc, if you return it all screwed up, they just charge you for the game.
Now, if you can convince hundreds of thousands of kids and teenagers to stop mishandling the games, then maybe I woudl feel sorry for ya and say shame onBB for making you use a credit card.
You guys are totally wrong. I just rented a game yesterday, 03/01/07. I was easily able to pay the $8.55 in cash for the Wii game. You most likely got tricked into signing up for that program that gives you unlimited rentals for a month. That you need a credit card for, but is somthing that you opt, or are supposed to opt, to go in for. Blockbuster does not make you use credit cards for next gen rentals or any other rentals from then.

You have to give them 50 dollars to rent one game and then you get it back after you rent your $50 worth of games? ROFLMFAO. If that's actually true, I would never rent from Blockbuster again. They are a rip compared to Hollywood Video anyways. That's ridiculous, I'm going to be a smartass one day and walk in there and ask if I get interest on my $50.

I live 5 minutes from a video store called Mamoth Video (I don''t think it's a very large chain... if it is one) and considering the place I live, we never have problems like that, but granted I mainly rent movies... sooooo, it could be different. All you need is a phone number in the database and BOOM, you can rent a movie or game any way you like (as long as you're not a minor trying to get something with an 18 or older sticker.... but the only thing I've seen that on is Showgirls... which I'd like to see; I've heard it's good.) I love going there and being able to rent any movie or game because they're not stingy about age like some other video stores. Hell, The Devil's Rejects doesn't even have an 18 or older sticker on it. good movie. woops, looks as if I've started typing a little off-topic. I'm tired, so pardon any errors or rambling. Guh-bye.
