Yoshi's Island blew me away. So many clever platforming sequences, so much charm... I must also mention, numerous hidden levels that provide a hardcore challenge for those of us who enjoy it. I couldn't get enough.
In second, I'd have to say super mario world, which wasn't as charming as it's sequel, but gave me a ton of ingenius platforming sequences, every moment of which I loved.
In third, Mario 64, of course. Nintendo made the expert move to 3D with this brilliant game. It's really close between this and world, and for good reasons. Oh man, I may just have to run back and grab a star on Rainbow Ride now. Mario 64 rocks.
After that, though I'm usually not one to give such high praise to a brand new game, I love Mario Galaxy. It may eternally be 4th on my list, but among Mario games, is that truly anything but praise?
