Just a congratulations to Zelda: ALBW for winning GOTY here at Gamespot, and it's the first handheld game to do so.

Well deserved, and a nice way to cap off such a great year for the 3DS in general.

I liked Super Mario 3D World better, but - even though I have not played the contenders of other platforms - ALBW is certainly good enough to win a GOTY award.

I thought the game was a bit too short and easy, but it is also the best all-around Zelda since Ocarina of Time. It does not have any blatant flaws like the Zelda games since OOT have had, and it is a very focused title. There is not a single moment in it that is not very enjoyable.

It is one of those rare games to which the tag "All killer, no filler" applies very well.

Wow. This is awesome. The game is phenomenal and definitely deserves it but I never in a million years expected it to win a GOTY award. Neither did anyone else here, apparently.

It was either going to be Zelda, gta5 or bioshock infinite. It always has been and always will be a GOTY for a very mainstream, high selling, and highly talked about game that reached the largest audience and got the most attention. A lot of times its also a franchise sequel because if its in a franchise then its safe to say most people like it.

That doesn't mean the game will be the best, but it will always be a game that the majority of people know of and will agree with. Was Zelda a good game? Yes. Was it the best? No, it was just playing on nostalgia of the Zelda franchise name and played on the nostalgia of a link to the past which most gamers consider to be a great game. If they changed the art style and didn't put it in link to the pasts setting then it would not have won despite otherwise being exactly the same. 99% of the time GOTY is always "a safe bet".

Its called playing to the lowest common denominator.

Plus this way they get to not piss anyone off that is involved in the console war between sony and Microsoft.

It's my personal GOTY do I think it's well deserved. Most of the dungeon design are fantastic and extremely clever.

I checked the records of Gamespot's goty history. This is a first.

Because if there were ever a time to award goty to a handheld, it has to be from a Zelda game. Gamespot gets that, they get that it.

I disagree with the GTA or Bioshock thing simply because of how The Last of Us got GOTY on PS3 (and beat out GTA5 and Bioshock). So logically those two weren't in contention. Unless I'm missing another consideration to add to the equation.

I find it hilarious that they did this, simply because we all know that the only other games that will be recognized as GOTY on other gaming sites are GTA, Bioshock and Last of US. Pretty much everything else need not apply, so I think that Gamespot doing this is actually cool and funny.

A Link between Worlds was definitely the best zelda game I've played since A Link to the Past. I absolutely loved the soundtrack.

Yup it's pretty awesome. Highly addicting, finally you have some use for 'em rupees.

It inspired me to buy a 3DS...Fire Emblem Awakening was enough to peak my interest, but after playing the new Zelda demo I had to buy this. In fact, I haven't had a handheld since the ORIGINAL Game Boy.
