I've been listening to alot of my Gang Starr CD's recently, and I was just curious what the folks at OTB think is the best.

I think Daily Operation is the best, definitely one of my favorite albums ever, but Step In The Arena is amazing as well. Sometimes I don't know which one I like more.

Hard To Earn and Moment of Truth are brilliant as well, but nothing hits me like their second and third albums. I still need to check out No More Mr. Nice Guy and The Ownerz.

I gotta go with Moment of Truth. Best Premo beats on there for Gangstarr and the sound never gets old to me. After that would be Step Into The Arena then Daily Operation.

Daily Operation.....Moment of Truth is somewhat overrated, but it contains some material that I'd consider one of Guru and Premo's best.

Step in the Arena is their best imo even if the production wasn't as good as Moment of Truth or Daily Operation, everything seemed to come together right.  The Meaning of the Name is a really underrated track, Check the Technique, Who's gonna take the weight, Step in the arena, Lovesick, Take a Rest are all classics.  Moment of Truth comes 2nd for me. I actually used to skip some good tracks like "She Knowz What she Wantz" and "Next Time".  The sampling is also superb on this album

Awesome thread.

Dangerously close tie between Daily Operation and Step In The Arena. Although DO would take the edge in my opinion.

Speaking of which, I'm really curious on forgetwhatyahear, Andrew_basic, and iRock's (oh wait, he's banned ) opinion on this matter....since they seem very knowlagable in hip-hop to know what should be considered dope or not.

Well, for its time I would say Daily Operation.

But the best album by them is The Ownerz. The beats are just too crazy.

I have to go with Moment of Truth, even though they have four albums that I would consider classics. I just find it to be the most complete album, the beats are top-notch and Guru is on point like always, but I find it to have their best combination of songs of any of their albums. The album also has some great guest appearances from dudes like Scarface and Inspectah Deck. Daily Operation is a close second though.

word, Hard to Earn is definitely in the game and is better than Moment of Truth imo.

Daily Op is my favourite, I bumped the crap out of it when I first got the album, I enjoyed it so much. I think I'm too familiar with it now.

I'd still consider Step In the Arena my second favourite but Hard to Earn comes really close.

That's because Hard to Earn is not that great compared to other GS albums.....with the exception of Mass Appeal. ;)

I like Hard To Earn, but I find some of the beats on that album to be pretty boring... I think Step In The Arena, Daily Operation, and Moment Of Truth are all classics. I think Hard to Earn is just an above average album compared to those.

How is Hard to Earn boring? It's straight ownage!

I think Premo really hit another level on Hard To Earn, I mean where else are you gonna hear beats like ALONGWAYTOGO and Brainstorm. Those are like far out electric-funk type beats. And then you get the genius simplicity of beats like DWYCK, Guru's verse on Speak Ya Clout, Now You're Mine and Comin For Datazz. Then you've got the awesome 'coming of age' track The Planet with what sounds like a reggae loop. Thats the kind of range Premo achieves on this album. You can see how he was constantly evolving as a producer and I think Hard to Earn is the best example of how he can re-invent himself if you compare it with Daily Operation.

And Guru owns as per usual. Tracks like Code of the Streets and Tonz o Gunz show he can still drop searing social commentary and then he BOMBS on wack MCs throughout the rest of the album. Guru came back with a vengance on Hard to Earn.

"Step Inside the Arena".

Gangstarr's debut isn't bad, either; dunno where you guys are getting that from.
