Once the Game surfaced as a force in hip-hop, a big deal was made of his dance with death. Apparently he was shot five times. If you're scoring at home, that's four times less than label mate and executive producer 50 Cent. After the altercation that nearly took his life, the Game took a crash course in hip-hop and studied up on the master MCs from both coasts. Within a year of rapping for the first time, Dr. Dre took notice and was compelled to offer an Aftermath contract. The Game is also from Compton, just like his mentor, so guess where the allegiances fall? An N.W.A medallion hangs from his neck, an N.W.A logo is inked across his chest, and an image of the late Eazy-E is on his right forearm. If none of this makes it clear enough, the Game name drops beloved heroes -- including just about everyone ever connected to N.W.A, save for CPO -- with great frequency. The stage name, coined by his mother while he was an athletic youngster, is entirely fitting: verses are constructed with album titles, label heads are mentioned as if scholarly attention is paid to the industry's inner workings. And yet, this is hardly another Guerilla Black, an MC lacking originality. The Game's scope is obviously much wider, and he's no mimic; though he's still finding his feet as a lyricist, isn't as distinct vocally as 50 or Lloyd Banks, and nearly allows the gimmicks to overwhelm the skills, The Documentary is an excellent debut that also hints at a lot of potential. Dr. Dre and an all-star cast of fellow producers are in top form, Just Blaze, Timbaland, Kanye West, and Hi-Tek included, and none of the features steal any thunder from the star. The most remarkable aspect of the Game is how he can be such a blatant product of gangsta rap (okay, let's say fanboy) and leave a mark so fast. But, as he says in "Dreams," "Anything is possible if 50 ----ed Vivica."

Considering his impact on the game, no pun intended, this album really should be a classic, it put him on the map and is a pretty solid album for being his first. Production was excellent and as far as a historical moment in hip hop, its when Game and G-Unit were still aight.

Classic for sure, and if you dont vote now, 10 years from now it will be a classic for sure.

I guess I'm the only one of 4 people to not think it's not a classic. I think it's close but not that good.

No, it's definatley a great album but definatley not a cIassic. Especially considering that there's a ton of albums that should've been mentioned before The Documentary. I love it and it's a great album but just not cIassic material.

Your right that's not a classic but that shouldn't be an excuse to add more non-cIassic albums to the list.

I did this one because the older classics are so obviously classic that there's not a point in arguing them anymore. Oh yeah, definitely classic. From beginning to the end, every song is a different sound with great production and I thought that The Game had great lyrics. He's actually kind of fallen off since this.

A+>>>>>>>>>The Game. Not even debatable.

I'd call this a modern day cl@ssic though. Not one song I hate on The Documentary, and the guest appearances owned.

Do you guys think the cIassic threads work better without a poll? It actually makes people post and promotes more people talking about the album... plus I notice some people will post yes or no in the thread but they forget to vote in the poll and their vote doesn't get counted...

I think the poll is better because its easier to count up... but you are right about the promoting posts thing. I dunno, lets just leave it up to whoever makes the ****c thread?

No I like it with the poll because it's easy to count the votes, and maybe there are some people who don't feel like posting.

Thank god.

Seriously, I remeber back when this was album coming out, him saying he was going to bring the west back ... ****, the dude can't even rap. The best thing he has going for him is a kind of cool voice.

But if anything, he's getting better with age, not falling off. In particular I like alot of his more recent mixtape material, because it sounds like he's trying to rip off his (much much more talented) labelmates like Ya Boy and Clyde Carson.

I don't know how anyone could even consider this a classic ... ****, it's not even a good album ...

I liked a lot of Doctor's Advocate, but I just thought it was missing the production this one had. Doctor's Advocate may get better the more times you listen to it, but The Documentary was great from the get-go.

The Documentary was missing a major part of a rap album....an emcee.

The Game is AWFUL lyrically on this album. Comparable to, but not as awful as early No Limit, or Cash Money, but still...atleast "The Doctor's Advocate" was pretty dope lyrically....namedropping, sure, but dope nonetheless. I'm actually really looking forward to LAX, because I believe of the emcee's in the mainstream, Game has the capability to drop a classic disc.

For me this is a modern day classic. Not many albums within the last 4-5 years have hit harder then 'The Documentary'. I think at the time The Game had so much hype it was unbelievable and for me, he dealt with all that pressure and delivered a modern day classic. From start to finish the album is solid and I never find myself skipping through any of the tracks. We all know the production is some of the best out there but for all those who say The Game is a mediocre MC, I think we're listening to two different people.

Whilst I'm not saying he is super lyrical, I feel The Game more then holds his own and I believe he is a natural MC. 'The Documentary' had some nice lyrics IMO and I disagree with anyone stating that he is a mediocre MC. I can't remember many rappers dropping an album as good as his with so much hype built around him. IMO 'Doctors Advocate' was a much weaker project then 'The Documentary' and although I respect The Game for trying to do his own thing without the help of DRE, some parts of the album needed that guiding hand to help him through. For instance the track 'Doctors Advocate' failed to have the same impact as 'Start From Sratch' and some of the tracks on the album felt abit forced at times. However, he still came through with that banger, as 'One Blood' did well to emulate the success of 'How We Do'.

I have a strong feeling The Game's latest album, 'L.A.X.', has the potential to be classic material. Say what you want about him as a person/MC but there is no doubting The Game's ability when it comes to dropping albums of the highest quality.
