Electric Circus cost and won Common some fans. It was very exploratory, especially so for a rap album released in 2002, containing developments -- some of which soared, some of which sank -- that few longtime followers could have foreseen. Listeners either felt Common was picking up fresh, new inspirations, or that he was just being distracted by a whole lot of ill-fitting nonsense. With Be, it seems the MC has realized that not every album that's sprawling and eclectic is as good as Electric Ladyland or Songs in the Key of Life. More notably, he might've been struck with the fact that a high percentage of excellent albums are around 40 minutes in length and are built on a unified sound. Be is highly concentrated, containing 11 songs and involving two producers and a small number of guests. It's a 180 degree turn from Electric Circus, and in a bizarre way it's both a progression and a back-to-basics move. Kanye West and Dilla are key to the album's steadiness, rooting the sound in '70s soul and soul-jazz. That's no shakeup, but the two producers deserve some form of award for stringing together a consistent sequence of productions that is never monotonous, dull, or all that flashy. Even lead single "The Corner," heard well before Be's release, falls into the fabric of the album on first listen, as if that were where it belonged all along. Lyrically, Common comes back down to Earth -- the narratives are sharp as ever, the gripes are more like observations than screeds, and the eccentricities need to be teased out rather than swatted away. Be isn't likely to be referred to by anyone as groundbreaking, but it's one of Common's best, and it's also one of the most tightly constructed albums of any form within recent memory.

As much as I love me some Common, I can't say yes to this. I like the album a lot though.

No.... Maybe if the whole thing was produced by Dilla, because the Dilla beats own on this album... I would have like to hear Be with just Dilla doing the production.

Good album, def. not a classic imo

Chittlin Circuit > Listening

and I say No to this.. Its a solid album with solid tracks like Love Is (one of my favorite Common tracks and Dilla beat) but not nearly as good as Resurrection and LWFC

Dilla rapes tho

I like instrumental albums and all, but I can't listen to background music repeatedly...it's nice when an artist stops the album for maybe a 1-6 minute instrumental once or twice on an album, but listening to that ish back to back = yawn

Though I do admit I haven't listened to TRONIC in quite some time. It's really one of those albums you need to be in the mood to listen to. Still, I don't think I'm ever in the mood to listen to anything from Common, post-Like Water For Chocolate.

(the second of which, heavily featured your boy Dilla.)iHeartCali

wow i didn't know that, thanks for informing me

From wikipedia:

According to D'Angelo, producer and drummer Questlove acted as the album's "co-pilot" and helped design the sparse funky soul and hip hop beats on what is generally a groove-based record.[4] D'Angelo and his supporting personnel constructed several of the songs' grooves for the album to sit far behind time, directly on top of time, or pressing on the time, making them cluttered and loose in ****[22] In later interviews, Questlove discussed that he and D'Angelo incorporated much of the distinctive percussive rhythms of Detroit hip hop producer, Slum Village-member and The Ummah-affiliate J Dilla, also known as Jay Dee. A part of the musical collective Soulquarians, Dilla served as a frequent collaborator of theirs.[18][23] Although tracks such as "Left & Right" and "Devil's Pie" help to bring this claim to light, J Dilla himself was not officially credited for the album. However, he contributed significantly to Voodoo's overall sound, specifically the rhythm and percussion.[18] Questlove later stated that "jay dee did the lauryn track", referring to the Lauryn Hill-collaboration "Feel Like Makin' Love".[14] One of the characteristics of the drumming ****of Voodoo is its adherence to human timing, as the tracks were mostly programmed mechanically during recording, therefore resulting in the album's intentional sloppiness.[24] In a later interview, Questlove discussed the intention and purpose of including imperfection in the album's sound, stating "we wanted to play as perfectly as we could, but then deliberately insert the little glitch that makes it sound messed up. The idea was to sound disciplined, but with a total human feel."[23] Questlove also acknowledged J Dilla's influence over the recording sessions and discussed Dilla's unique programming method, stating "He makes programmed stuff so real, you really can't tell it's programmed. He might program 128 bars, with absolutely no looping or quantizing ... When Q-Tip from A Tribe Called Quest first played me some of his stuff, I said, 'The drums are messed up! The time is wrong!' And when we did a song for D'Angelo's record that Lenny Kravitz was supposed to play on, Lenny said, 'I can't play with this — there's a discrepancy in the drum pattern.' And we're like, 'It's supposed to be this way!'[23] During the final days of recording, Questlove spent time recording a version of Fela Kuti's "Water No Get Enemy", a melodic protest song from the afrobeat artist's album Expensive **** (1975).[21] He and D'Angelo had intended to revamp it into a minimalist soul ballad for Lauryn Hill to contribute vocals afterwards. However, Hill declined, and the track ended up as a place-holder for the rough mix of the album.[25] A reconceptualized version of the song by D'Angelo and other guest artists later appeared on Red Hot + Riot (2002).[25]

He didn't actually produce anything (most of the actual production was done by D'Angelo himself) but he influenced the sound, and was a heavy contributor.

Yeah it's dope that Dilla had an influence in the record, wasn't he in charge of the programming throughout the album?
