Biggest Surprises: TheGrimesrecord really has blown me away. Same with thatCloud Nothingsrecord. Both came from artists that I'd never paid much attention to. The latest record fromBeach Househas also really caught my fancy. I really didn't like them much before this year. I'm really impressed with their latest record & new emphasis on production. They want from making beautiful records to beautifully engaging records and it shows just how much they've been working on their craftsmanship. Another band that's really surprised me isAlabama Shakeswith their "Boys & Girls" LP. The record is nowhere near my top 10, but the level of talent the lead singer has, has me really excited for their future releases. Royal Headache's debut LP has also really caught my eye. Soulful punk music....and damn good.
Grimes, "Genesis" (deam pop)
Cloud Nothings, "Our Plan" (pop-punk, post-heardcore)
Beach House, "Lazuli" (dream pop)
Alabama Shakes, "Heartbreaker" (soul, country rock)
Royal Headache, "Really In Love" (soulful post-punk sound)
Records your favorite review sites aren't talking about, but I'm going gaga over:I haven't seen any commotion over thatPorcelain RaftLP which is a shame because it's been pushing my top 3 all year.La Sera'ssophomore effort is exactly what I expected as far as improvement over her potential laden debut record.Household's "Items"LP has received minimal hype this year, In fact, it's actually impossible to find as a free download this year. Still, it holds as one of my favorite LPs from this year.Violens, "True"LP is just barely out of my top 10 this year, but it's received little fanfare from indie heads this year, which is a shame.
Porcelain Raft, "The End Is Silence" (dream pop, shoegaze sound)
La Sera, "It's Over Now" (noise pop)
Household, "Our Song" (punk on occasion, pop on occasion)
Violens, "Der Microarc" (pop music
That Awfully Overrated Record:Hands down,Japandroids, "Celebration Rock,"has been the most overrated LP this year. Also, I see nothing to go crazy about when it comes toZammuto'sself titled LP,Big KRIT's "4 Eva N A Day"orAb-Soul'sSoul Controlrecord (though I was thoroughly impressed with songs on both albums. Also, I wish everyone would get off the latest LPs fromJack White, Julia HolterandLotus Plaza-- neither are doing a thing for me.
