"If it ain't broke don't fix it. If you start to break it then people aren't going to go. I'm sorry, but Jay-Z? No chance. Glastonbury has a tradition of guitar music and even when they throw the odd curve ball in on a Sunday night you go 'Kylie Minogue?' I don't know about it. But I'm not having hip hop at Glastonbury. It's wrong."
-Noel Gallagher of the rock band Oasis

Jay-Z was chosen as the headliner for this year's Glastonbury Music festival, which usually draws an audience of over 150 thousand fans, and there was controversy as to how a rap act would appeal to the crowd. Jay-Z had a lot of supporters ranging from Usher to Chris Martin of Coldplay to the event organizer Emily Eavis sticking by her choice of Hov, but still there was a lot of controversy, critics, and doubt over the selection of Jay-Z.

Lupe Fiasco's speech at Glastonbury 2008 yesterday

Well the festival has been going on this weeked and it looks like the controversy was for nothing. It's obvious hip-hop has a place at the festival judging by the crowd's reaction to Lupe's speech and the entire crowd chanting "Lupe! Lupe! Lupe!" at the end of his set. Even if you don't like Lupe or Jay-Z, hip-hop definitely got a win at this music festival. Hip-hop is worldwide.

Watch Lupe Fiasco's set (video)

-Daydreamin'
-Hip Hop Saved My Life
-Kick, Push
-Little Weapon
-Streets on Fire
-Paris, Tokyo
-Superstar

Footage from Jay-Z's set will probably be up after he hits the stage later today.

Agreed. The worst thing is that most of them have never even given Hip Hop a chance.

At the Austin City Limits festival last year, Common was on the list as one of the acts and I thought that was strange. But his crowd presence was pretty large and everybody got into him. Del the Funkee Homosapien is performing this year. I'm kind of excited for him.

"I Gotcha" was a dope second single...but yeah, the album probably would've come out around the time of the first single, but the leak probably ruined it...

Props to Hov for holding it down for hip hop.

DayDreamin live might be one of my favorite things ever. Lupe held his own too, no doubt.

Alright Hip Hop, you've got the critics right you want them. They're tired, discouraged and Glastonbury busted them wide open. Keep them off the ropes and keep up that left jab.

He wasn't really playing it, just mocking the dude from Oasis who said "Glastonbury has a tradition of guitar music" and that Jay-Z had no place at the festival.

Yeah the Black Album was much more rock crossover, like Run-DMC. I definitely was not feeling the songs. Girls, Girls, Girls - it is an awesome song but I don't think it means much when Jigga the Hov is married to Beyoncé.

Jay-Z's Black Album Singles Chart Again After Glastonbury

Only a few days after performing as one of the headlining acts at England's Glastonbury Festival, rapper Jay-Z is starting to reap the benefits of his at times controversial performance chart wise.

Although it has been five years since The Black Album was released "99 Problems" is expected to break into the Top 25 Downloads bracket for the mid-week UK single charts.

Also returning to the charts is "Encore" which broke into the Top 40.

Jay-Z along with coordinators of the festival received criticism from Noel Gallagher, a member of the English rock band Oasis, for choosing Jay-Z as a headlining act for what Gallagher considered to be a guitar-driven event although groups such as The Roots, Cypress Hill, and De La Soul have performed at the festival.

Come performance time, Jay-Z lyrically shot back at Gallagher and other critics with his own rendition of Oasis' song "Wonderwall" and a fiery performance of "99 Problems."
