I'm looking for some good non-black nationalist political hip hop. I like to have a clear musical side of the music not just a guy yelling over a half-a$$ beat about how the white man is the root of all evil.

Stuff I like...
Ice Cube/Da Lench Mob
Public Enemy
KRS-One
Nas

Stuff I dislike....
Paris - Bad
Immortal Technique - Worse
Dead Prez - Worst

Stuff I know of but never listened to or only a little bit...
The Coup
The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy
X-Clan
Jedi Mind Tricks
Psycho Realm
Intelligent Hoodlum

i actually liked dead prez's lets get free. I don't know why but i dug it. I agree with you though,Ice cube during his amerikkkas most wanted era is better than any self proclaimed "political rapper". Why the hell is I.T. still popular? who likes getting preached to about how america is bad and black people rule and all that mumbo jumbo. Him and KRS-One need to form a hip-hop curch together and leave people alone.

How is black nationalism stupid crap :| ? Just because you don't like hearing about it, doesn't mean it is crap. Maybe it's important to them? And honestly, what do you expect? Most of those rappers have grown up in communities where feeling indignant was common. If you grew up in a place where a lot of people around you blamed a certain race for their problems, and everyone felt oppressed, what would rap about when you found that you were skillful with a mic? Ponies and government scandals? No. You'd rap about what people have made you look at your race's situation as.

I can see where you're going, as history has shown a couple times how nationalism turns into racism. But I think nirvana is overreacting to the message/subject these rappers are penning in their rhymes.

Nah. It's entertaining. I don't take any of the stuff they say seriously, and I really don't think it's that hate fillled tbh.

KRS didn't go in for the NOI Black Nationalism stuff. You might want to skip X-Clan etc.

Ice Cube's Death Certificate is my favourite 'social commentary' album but he does have those NOI interludes, which I skip.

PE were the main NOI fanboys but I think Chuck must have outgrown the more discriminatory aspects of it at least.

Definitely check the Coup albums Orlando mentioned, they are good political Hip-Hop.

I think its good to understand why so many rappers hold Black Nationalist ideals but I don't listen to Hip-Hop to learn about Sociology and Political Philosophy and I won't rule an artist out based on their attitude towards race but on the quality of their beats and rhymes.

Read the collected essays of James Baldwin and The Autobiography of Malcolm X they're definitely good reads on 20th Century American race relations.

First off let me start by saying I didn't intend to start a race war on OTB :P. Anyhow there a lot of things I want to reply back to so I'll go one at a time.

[QUOTE="nirvana563"]

[QUOTE="TheHimura"]Who is Paris?elpooz

#1 Black Nationalism as said before in this topic is a lot of times loosely close to racism. #2 Poverty is not a excuse for racism...no debate. But I do understand poverty and the race relations many blacks and others face are hard and I don't mind listening to someone being angry. You most likely know I'm a big Ice Cube fan and Ice Cube says stuff about white people and it doesn't bother me at all since he's not referring to the white race but just too racist whites and more racists in general. I forget off the top of my head which song it was but it was off of the "AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted" record there is a line that goes something like "You want to talk about Africa, I'll stare at ya since we don't have it too good in America".

lol elpooz makes a legit point, nirvana reminds me of the dude that doesn't know how privileged his white skin is.iHeartCali

.......To sum this up...you don't know me. You don't know my economic status, who I know or anything like that so who are you to say I'm "privileged"?

And just to put to put it out there, I have a poster of Malcolm X on my wall with a quote about not judging others on color of there skin (in short). And honestly I had hopes when I first heard Paris since I heard he was Muslim and a lot of times Muslim rappers are very smart and what not and I study Islam a fair bit myself and I feel a little sorry for Brother Paris for seeming to miss some of the equality teached in Islam.

Also props out to, HaSheeSh_basic,for the support.Whatever that was about.

....I think its good to understand why so many rappers hold Black Nationalist ideals but I don't listen to Hip-Hop to learn about Sociology and Political Philosophy and I won't rule an artist out based on their attitude towards race but on the quality of their beats and rhymes.

Agreed, I don't listen to music to learn about "Sociology and Political Philosophy" as you said. But like talked about before a lot of the time Black Nationalism is most likely really close to racism. And I have said this before at other times but I'll say it again, I don't feel the need to agree with every last thing a song/artist talks about. I'm fine with different views but I tend to look at it that if I don't agree with at least 3/4 of a song/artist then there tends to be problems.

And to all the Dead Prez debates, a lot of people heard my orginal dead prez debate so I'll just say I disagree a lot with there outlook on things.

To sum up my views really quick...NO RACE IS ANY BETTER THEN ANY OTHER. All have invented things and have done countless different good deeds in time so I don't support any supremacy of any kind. I can understand anger and frustration but not racism. Refer back to the end to "We're Not Alone" by Nas.

Also one last thing I have always noticed in any type of "communist", "socialist", "Marxist", really far-left wing political bands/artists is they nearly always do things they talk against like marketing. And most don't have ideas for solutions to the issues they bring up. And as someone with fairly far-left wing political stances I find this kind-of odd.

EDIT: I don't think it makes muchof a difference but after listening to a lot more of Paris's music I don't think he's Muslim but more Atheist or something of that sort.
