How do you like the idea of artists releasing their music for free online?

I'm sure many of you are aware of Radiohead releasing their latest album for free online at inrainbows.com. How would you feel if more music, particularly rap, took this approach? Artists could release music for free to their audience, and record labels (industry rule #4080, record company people are shady) would have much diminished, if any, roles in the transaction process between the artist and fan. An artist could still make money off the album by selling advertisements on the website that people download from, so it's not like they would go broke either. Is this the wave of the future?

Well the cool part is that it allows you to give any amount of money you wish, early figures report that they think there going to make over 9 million, which is pretty nuts. 1.2 million copies sold/downloaded. I think this is going to be a big deal when the final sales and figures are released. Interesting concept, it will be strange to see who does it next, especially in the hip hop world. Choosing the price for things is a great idea, I would throw a few dollars towards artists if it was this easy. The artist also gets alot more money this way, its straight money to the back then the record company and stores getting all the money. Money goes straight to the artist.

You can buy it now, you get the download, and they mail you the album when it officially comes out in stores in about a month or two. Theres also a box set package thats a little more expensive.

They know they are still gonna make a killing on ads, concerts, merchandise, etc.

Some artists are only in it for the money so it will never happen with them.

Rock fans are for the most part more loyal than rap fans. If jay-z did the same thing, how many of you would actually give him money? Especially since you already know he's swimming in gold coins like scrooge mcduck right now.

He could make money from advertisements on the site though, which would be sure to draw millions of hits.

I'd give Jay-Z a max of 5 bucks, and thats way more than he actually would get if I went and bought the album. I think the artists gets like 3-8% of a cd sold at a retail store etc.

i'm actually listening to the radiohead album now :) i love the concept that radiohead took with this album, and i honestly think that a ton of artists are about to copy them. even if half the people who download it decide to only give $5 or $10 each, thats still probably more money to the band than it would be if they put out albums the traditional way through these huge record companies. plus with a band with a following as big as radiohead, all the people that download the album for free are gonna be made up for by loyal fans giving them $20-$30 because they truly love their music. this would also make artists actually try to make great music

I think it's a good way to combat ilegall downloads seeing as people who weren't gonna pay for it in the first place will d/l it free from there and if they have advertising etc. on the website then the money from that will compensate (if not surpass) for the people who d/ld for free.

I'd download it free to see how it is then download it officially off the website if I thought it was worth it. I'd probably pay a fiver if I enjoyed it, maybe more if I liked it a lot.

Myka 9 did that with his latest joint, and from what I remember it was relatively successful. Plus, the artists get brownie points from the fans, which may lead to more sales if they release a successive album. I like the idea.

I like the idea a lot actually, especially for hip-hop. Without pressure from record labels, artists could put whatever they wanted to on their albums, the idea being that it would hopefully lead to more quality music(?).

I am 100% for that idea. It would give the artist more control over the sound of their album. If the album is worth buying I will defiantely purchase it.

We had a discussion about this in my English class, I'm down for this type of marketing strategy, but I don't think it's going to be beneficial to up-and-coming artists compared to established bands such as Radiohead.

Well I think the only problem I have with albums is they need to be $7 stanard, not that $10-$15 is bad just $7 would really get people to buy more albums.
