So I copped KC, honestly I wasn't expecting the worst, but I was kinda shook at all of the "it's aiight" reviews I had been hearing about certain tracks & the album itself. Luckily I got the opportunity to listen to the entire album today, since I left my wallet at home :P and had to drive to GM Proving Grounds. All I can say is WTF are people complaining about; this **** is better than TBA, and I haven't even gotten the chance to digest the lyrics completely yet.

The intro is "crack" as the kids say, dude is spittin:

...The game is ****ed up/
****** beats is bangin; ***** your hooks did it/
Your lyrics didn't; your gangsta look did it/
So I would write it, if ya'll could get it/
Being intricate'll get you "wood", critic/
On the internet, they like "you should spit it"/
I'm like, "you should buy it; ***** it's good business"/

Then Oh My God is just, woah. I honestly listened to the lyrics somewhat on this track, but the beat is just "damn". Kingdom Come is solid, if not above average, same with Show Me What You Got. I love Lost One, Do You Wanna Ride is aiight, the Kanye beat sounds like Last Call pt 2, though. 30 somethin is the ****. I made it is at lease solid. I was scared as hell when I saw Usher/Pharrell & B on back to back tracks, but neither is really bad at all, and although IMO Jay shouldn't have to make songs like Anything anymore, he does a nice job on it. Trouble is cold, although the hook is annoying. The hiphopsite review compared it to Outta Control remix, I don't see it. Dig a Hole is tight. I do agree with the review here; Swiss has given out tight beats this year, although his joint on the Doc's Advocate is the same way; nice but not overwhelming. Minority Report is nice, solid. Then Beach Chair is woah. As far as comparisons to 99 problems (seen them a couple times due to the rock production) it just ****s all over it.

There's no Justify My Thug's on the album (I hate the production on that track), IMO Anything & Hollywood are at least catchy, I think Jay is actually nice on Change Clothes, but it's a very skippable track IMO. Threat is cold because of the concept, but the 9th beat was always mediocre by his standards (both of his remixes destroy the original). Kanye's beats on TBA murder his contribution on KC, I'll give you that. But Just, PSA & Dec 4th were fire, maybe better than KC & Show Me, but Oh My God is fiyyah. And the Dre production give the album a unique (and dope) feel compared to his other albums.

But IMO KC sons TBA, I'll see how I feel in a few months, see if the lasting value is there.

P.S. I do agree with Marley Marl, This album would have really been tight with Premo on it, if he would have done dig a hole I bet he woulda killed it.

Kingdom Come keeps growing on me. I think it's nearly a classic. The only song I don't like is "Show Me What You Got."

See, I never got what the big negative was about Show Me, it's sick to me. Jay kills the first verse. To each it's own I guess. But in any case, whatever, I expected the type of reaction I'm getting from people in this thread based on the preliminary hate KC was getting. IMO if TBA is a "near classic" (which IMO it isn't) then, as nutDAVE says, KC deserves the same designation. Someone explain to me what is so bad about KC. I'll bump it while you tell me about how much of a "flop" it is.

"The Prelude" is also one of the better intros I've heard in a while. Dope, dope stuff.

Bingo. There are actually people at hiphopdx saying it's the worst album this year . I hate haters who hate just to hate (not really referring to the people here, talking about the type of people at dx. My friend told me that she heard some radio program here calling it garbage, they probably played I Know You See right after the segment:roll: ).

"The Prelude" is one of my favorite songs of the year...I can't stop listening to it, Jay's flow is sick "Hollywood" and the song with Usher & Pharrell are the only songs I can't listen to on KC, everything else is real good...I have to say TBA is definitely better though

Word....I'm not feeling KC on the level that I did on TBA. Kinda dissapointed actually, but it's not a bad album, it's just not anything mind blowing/great IMO.

I don't see what makes Kingdom Come a bad album. People say the production is sub par,and the ones who say that are smoking la-la-la. I love "Lost One",even if he doesn't spit as much fire as he did on The Blueprint.

It's certainly not ****ing with BP, and if someone isn't feeling it like TBA than I understand, because it is dope too and has a different feel. Me personally, everytime I got in the car today I started from the beginning. In fact, the beginning of this album is just fiyah. The intro followed by OMG followed by KC?! ludicrous.

Still not feeling it, it's not like the album is bad, it's just that Jay has done better and there's nothing worth getting too hyped over here, it's simply more of the same ol' Jay.  Though, Kingdom Come is fire, "Peter Parker, Spider-Man/ All I do is climb the charts."  Love how he keeps all the references to comics in there, but still, the album doesn't pack as much fire as that.

Depends. As you can see, some people love it, some dudes think it's just so-so. Me? I think it's a very solid album, and I'm enjoying it thoroughly. It was only 10 bucks where I bought it, so it's definately worth it imo..

I just bought it for like $12 at Target. Just the cd was cheaper than $12, but I got the Deluxe Edition which comes with an extra DVD with live performances, making of Show Me What You Got, etc apparantly. Did any of you also get this DVD too?

And I wonder if the Deluxe Edition has a different CD case too because this is sweet... it opens into 4 sections.

EDIT: the live performance is from the Reasonable Doubt concert in Albert Hall out in the UK, the parts where he performs mostly Black Album songs after the Reasonable Doubt part.

Actually, thats what I used to think, but not anymore. Black Album > this. Although the production stands....Jay-Z pretty damn weak lyrically. Doesn't do much for me, sorry.

Maybe once I get a month or so of listening in & digest the lyrics more I'll feel that way, but of the first 3 listens (some tracks more than others, obviously), the thread title describes how I feel. And it's not like it's been years since I listened to TBA; I was bumping it less than a month ago, right before I copped Black is Back.

Its the beats...without good beats a song can totally loose its groove and be ruined. How you can appreciate a lyric when there is really not much behind it to back it up. Beats make lyrics sound much more complete in my opinion.

gotta say Beach Chair is my favorite song. The album is nice (lol at Pitchfork's 5.0 score), but I like the Black Album alot more.

[QUOTE="Improbus"][QUOTE="fat_rob"][QUOTE="Improbus"]Its the beats...without good beats a song can totally loose its groove and be ruined. How you can appreciate a lyric when there is really not much behind it to back it up. Beats make lyrics sound much more complete in my opinion. HaSheeSh_basic
beats can sound stale after listening to them repeatedly...rap beats are just loops for the most part, add repeated listens and ish gets mad annoying...the lyrics are the reason I keep listening to Allure, Dead Presidents, Brooklyns Finest, ect...the beats are dope, but the beats are dope on Yound Joc's cd too (he has some monster production on that album), but I'll never listen to that cd again...I listen to ish like RD, illmatic, 36 Chambers, ect. at least once a week, because of the lyrics...

I am like the complete opposite, I totally listen to albums for the beats first then the lyrics. Excellent lyrics are like a bonus for me.

I think I might actually like KC more then TBA. It's close though..can't really make up my mind. I don't see why so many people are hating on it. I think they got caught up in the hate and forgot to actually idk..listen to the actual cd:P Production isn't too bad and lyrics are still good. Yeah there are some crap songs but not every album has to be perfect.

Sorry for the late reply (I bought the record the day it came out; I just don't have a computer anymore); I just wanted to get my two cents in on the album.  I figure it's probably easiest for me just to do a track by track review:

1.  "The Prelude" (5/5) - Jay's best intro since "The Blueprint".  It's unmistakably an intro, but it can stand on it's own two feet as a dope song.  I dunno, there isn't much more to say about this song than it's everything that's always made him great.

2.  "Oh My God" (4/5) - The main beat itself is tight (if a little annoying), but it's the parts where Blaze switches it up, and Jay's flow throughout the song, that really make it worth listening to.

3.  "Kingdom Come" (5/5) - Again, I can't say much on this - this is pretty much perfection.  It's interesting how all signs seem to point to Jay using this as a single, though, as I can't imagine the mainstream digging this too hard.  But the fact that this is the title track almost leads me to believe Blaze and Jay were messing around with this in the studio one day and decided to make a whole album from there ... which is fine; this song is worth of making an album for.

4.  "Show Me What You Got" (4/5) - This song is really dependent on my mood .... in some moods, those horns are just annoying as hell.  And Jay's bragging just isn't quite as likeable as it usually is.  It's quite possible that this would get left out of a Jay-Z singles collection and nobody would care ... but it's still a pretty dope song on its own merit.

5.  "Lost One" (4.5/5) - You know, I wanted to dislike this one at first, as Jay's obviously done this type of song alot before, and done it alot better, and Dre is certainly capable of better than this beat ... but I can't deny it; it's an effective song.  I can picture the video to this one already - a very visceral song.

6.  "Do U Wanna Ride" (4/5) - I would've trimmed it by about a verse, but otherwise it's dope and very atmospheric.

7.  "30 Something" (5/5) - Oddly enough, probably my favorite song on the album.  It's just a slightly modified version of Dre's "Outta Control" beat (listen closely; it's true), but it's just airy and breezy production, and it's perfectly suited for Jay just to talk about whatever.  So it doesn't hurt that Jay delivers one of his best performances of the album here.  PS:  I wish my computer was working; I know I could recreate this in FL so well!

8.  "I Made It" (5/5) - If the previous track isn't the album's best, than this is.  The only real problem here is that, like the album's opener, it's an amazing track, yes, but it also sounds exactly like a lost track from "The Blueprint".  Nearly all the songs on "The Black Album" could be traced back to one of Jay's older albums, but that was fine, since it was supposed to be a career wrap-up.  If this is a new start in Jay's career, maybe he should try something new?  Regardless, it's an amazing song.

9.  "Anything" (5/5) - I knew, even before seeing this thread, that I'd be in the vast minority on this, but I really like this song.  Yeah, it's nothing new for Jay, but really, where are the "fun" songs on this album?  I love the bounce to this track, and the part where Jay spells out Usher Raymond's name ala Usher's debut album ... man, I was trippin' when I first heard that.  A nice end to a great three-song run here.

10.  "Hollywood" (1/5) - And here's where the album completely falls off and never comes back ... seriously, what is this?  Jay and Beyonce should stop making songs together, as it seems like each time they do it's getting worse and worse (and I loved "Crazy In Love").  This is just a mess, though.  If I could buy a version of the album without this track, I would.

11.  "Trouble" (2/5) - Wow ... it's sad when, in the same year, both Timbaland and Dre have broken down and used Lil Jon's synth presets.  At least most of the rest of the instrumentation on this song is classic Dre.  This song is growing on me with each listen, though, so the score for this one might change ...

12.  "Dig a Hole" (0/5) - Seriously - what is this?!  Swizz had been riding a string of great songs coming into this year, capped off with Beyonce's "Check On It".  But then he had that horrible song on TI's album, and now this disaster.  The greatest rap of all-time from Jay couldn't save this.

13.  "Minority Report" (1/5) - Another song to prove Dre just doesn't have it anymore ... even his best songs on here aren't amazing; they're just effective.  This song isn't amazing or effective, though ... it's just straight-up boring.  Good sample choice; bad execution.  And while Jay certainly has made subtle use of politics in his raps before (to great effect), leave this stuff to Chuck D, dude.

14.  "Beach Chair" (1/5) - "My 1st Song" on the Black Album is probably my favorite album closer to any record, ever.  So needless to say, I had really high expectations for the final song of "Kingdome Come".  While it isn't a great song, "Beach Chair" is perhaps the album's most telling.  Jay has recently been making several lines about his age in his verses; how he's reaching the middle ages and would prefer a pair of crisp jeans and polo fleeces to a throwback jersey.  Incidentally, he gets the assistence of the singer of every middle-aged white person's favorite band, Coldplay to produce this song.  And the prevelant beach chair metaphor of this song could probably only truly mean something the middle aged ... if not retirees.  So this all poses a unique question - are most people not really "getting" "Kingdome Come"?  Most people are treating it as just another Jay album which, on the surface, it is.  But if you look a bit closer, maybe it's more than that.  Jay is getting older and, coincidentally, most of his fanbase is too.  How much longer can he make rap music for teenagers?  Rap music for adults is something that has rarely been tried, and even more rarely succeeded, but if anyone could make it work, it'd definetely be Jay-Z.  "Kingdome Come" isn't a remarkable change of pace for Jay-Z, and this song isn't the one to launch a new era, but I'm really interested to see what adult rap music (done right) could really sound like ...
