The Pack were already around for years before "jerkin" was even a genre. If anything, all those LA dudes were ripping off Young L's styIe (Young L is the producer for The Pack). For real, I'd bet good money that dudes like J Hawk were heavily influenced by L's styIe. L is really killin' it these days, though ... I can't wait for the new Pack album.

Based was a term The Pack created for their sound to distance themselves from hyphy after that movement failed. You can see it in the title of their major label debut LP, "Based Boys". They never outright defined it - that was supposed to be some of the allure, I suppose, but at the same time, I never thought three years later the Pack would be relevant enough that I'd be explaining this - but it just basically meant that they had their own style. You see alot of terms thrown around - "lyric-based", "drum-based", etc. - but the fact that they simply chose "based" was supposed to mean there was no way to define them.

And now Lil B has kinda just taken the term wherever he wants to take it. So there you go.

Oh, and Colt, as for if people are sincere about their love for Lil B, or if he's just another internet sensation - the thing is this - I have no idea who here really likes Lil B, but at least, unlike Charles Hamilton, Drake, B.O.B., and any number of other internet buzz rappers, he's making his buzz off of doing something different. That alone should make him at least worth checking out, even if you don't end up enjoying it.

Young L was the only bright spot about the Pack. I bump their stuff, but none of them can actually spit. Young L production made their music likable to me though.

To make it clear, I am being totally sincere. I liked Lil B even before the based freestyles. I like and listen to almost every Lil B song (except the really ambient ones, the "Paint" tape was ehhhh and "Dior Paint" was pretty bad). To the haters who don't think he can rap, listen to his more conventional stuff like D.O.R. or Good Morning or the Can I Live freestyle and if you still say that then you have awful taste.

I know everything I know about based music from Nation of Thizzlam, Noz, and the defunct "Yay Mecca". Teamknoc is another old based group but I like only a handful of their stuff cause a lot of it is hilarious (like making Chris Farley's "Fat Guy in Little Coat" song into a hyphy song) though they're gone basically and were never that good.
