http://www.vibe.com/hiphopproducerblog/the-making-of-vibes-greatest-hip-hop-producer-of-all-time-wheres-questlove

So let's get right to it. Declaring the Greatest Hip-Hop Producer Of All-Time is a huge undertaking on par with mediating world peace. Good thing that you, our loyal Vibe.com readers, are the one's deciding on this fistfight inducing contest. Which brings us to the million-dollar question: How did we come up with the seeding for our all-star list of producers? Well, we can't say it wasn't a grueling process.

Choosing our original list of nearly 200 producers was tough enough. But breaking the list down to the final 64 participants was indeed daunting. Oh, and then we faced the ridiculous task of ranking these great beatsmiths, conductors, and musicians. What makes Dr. Dre a no. 1 seed, J Dilla 6th or will.i.am 16th? Everything from relevancy, influence, impact, and overall artistic reach in hip-hop were considered.

Some producers were left off because their most notable musical achievements did not resonate as strongly in the rap world (Jazzy Pha received most of his notoriety from his work with R&B stunner Ciara). Others were victims of their own era (Chub Rock and Special Ed producer Howie Tee just happened to be in his prime during hip-hop's competitive Golden Age era that spawned the likes of Marley Marl, The Bomb Squad and Prince Paul; And where's Warren G? With the likes of fellow West Coast giants Dre, Shock G, Daz Dillinger and DJ Quik in the mix, someone was bound to get squeezed out). Others, while talented, were still making their mark in the game (J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, Black Milk, and Shawty Redd). While some possessed extraordinary lyrical skills that dwarfed their own production work (Eminem, KRS-One and MFDoom). Then there were the producers who just missed the cut: including Company Flow's musical visionary El-P; Suave House's resident beatman T-Mix; the underrated Kwame, and early Jay-Z collaborator Ski).

But chief among our most controversial omissions was Roots front man and drummer Questlove. Long hours and fiery debates took place over just how to categorize a gifted musician who rarely took sole credit for the lauded Philadelphia band's great run of albums. The peak of Quest's hip-hop production prowess came with Common's groundbreaking Electric Circus project. And most of his musical triumphs beyond The Roots have been within the soul music genre (Quest's work on D'Angelo's epic Voodoo album shines brightest). We more than understand the uproar over Quest's lack of presence. But no one ever said hip-hop was easy...or fair.

That said, we believe the list is pretty damn good. The over 50,000 and counting hip-hop heads who have voted thus far in our Greatest Hip-Hop Producer Of All-Time competition exhibits just how passionate you guys are. As always thanks for your undying support and keep those votes coming. Remember, somebody has to be no.1. -Keith Murphy

The bracket won't load for me...but is that saying that MF DOOM didn't make the cut? :| Will.I.Am is more deserving than him, really?

I gotta see the bracket before I complain too much, but a #6 for Dilla seems really low.

Primo should win this in a landslide...but I doubt that'll happen. He'll probably lose to Timbaland or something.

Edit: Oh my god, Bangledesh called "A Milli" the best beat of this era. :|

Vibe: VIBE's Best Producer Alive Bracket has been sparking plenty of industry opinions - over the past week, Ginuwine has praised and exposed Timbaland, will.i.am showed off his Teddy Riley stanmanship, 9th Wonder went wild over... himself, Dame Grease made a bold prediction and now award-winning producer, Bangladesh-who's up against the more than well-respected DJ Premier-has a few words on his standing.

"I'm definitely deserving to be on the list as one of the best producers right now, but I wouldn't say hip-hop. Probably the only hip-hop thing I made was 'A Milli' and that was probably the greatest beat of this era," the Atlanta-based producer told VIBE. "I think if you really define hip-hop, Premier is really the best hip-hop producer. He's amazing with samples... he's the essence of hip-hop."

Bangladesh joins other rappers such as: Havoc, Jam Master Jay, RZA and Q-Tip in the Boom-Bap category, but felt he belonged more in Mass Appeal, or even his own division. "I have a sound that the masses like. But I wouldn't put myself in any of those categories. I'm probably in 'The Most Creative' box or 'Most Against The Grain,'" he says.

"All the producers in ['Mass Appeal'], they strive for certain things," he continued. "Like Polow will go in and say we need to make a pop record, we gotta make a Top 40 and that's what he'll make. See, I create organically and it becomes mass appealed. That's why I feel like I'm better. I don't do what is going to make me money or what the DJs are going to want to play. I just do me. And everything that I've done has been knocked down in the beginning, but at the end of the day it sticks to the walls. It don't take a label to back it up, it just blows because people want different ****."

Bangladesh, who is also responsible for Beyonce's "Diva" and "Radio Phone" as well as Mario's 2009 summer smash, "Break Up" continued his self-adamance. "Honestly, I'm better than all them peoples. I'm not disrespecting them because I was influenced by Timbaland and Neptunes and all of them, but your time came and went. There's time for other things to happen."

"A lot of them producers, some have a sound and some don't. I think Polow kinda does whatever, he doesn't have a certain sound, he emulates other peoples stuff. To me, he's probably a well-sought-out producer, but at the same time its about who you're with, who you're around, who's getting you the work," he continues. "I don't have assistance so I'm not in Jimmy Iovine's face. I don't get all the Interscope work, I create the work. That makes me better because I don't have people in my pocket. My sound is so powerful that the artist love it and it skips all the middle men. All my beats have been placed by getting it directly to the artist. I don't really need nobody cosigning." -Tracy Garraud

Vibe filed for bankruptcy during their Greatest Rapper of All Time contest and they never gave us the results. I believe it was Eminem vs. Jay-Z in the finals....

I would expect Dr. Dre to win this contest.

What's up with them listing the Poison Clan... they weren't self produced...

The #8 Ant Banks vs. #9 DJ Quik matchup was a tough choice for me. Went with Quik.

If #3 Organized Noize loses to #14 9th Wonder in the first round that will be worst travesty....

The lowest seed I have winning their matchup is #11 Larry Smith over #6 Trackmasters

K-Def, Showbiz, Buckwild and Godfather Don are more deserving than MF Doom. Figured they've could have fit Mike Dean up on the regional sound bracket as well.

^Premo's the #1 under boom-bap. Alchemist is #9 under soul sample.

Kanye's a #1? :? Seriously? Don't get me wrong I like him as a producer...but his "region" is stacked with guys I'd put way above Kanye.

Mr. Lee was the #14 seed on the Homegrown Sound bracket. He ended up losing in the first round to the Bomb Squad, which I don't think you'd disagree with ;)

9th beat out Organized Noize. :|TheHimura

Goes to show you how underrated they are. No way 9th should have won that. Organized Noize has 9th Wonder beat on both hip-hop and R&B production.

Outkast- Git Up Git Out (instrumental)

TLC- Waterfalls (instrumental)

I want to know who the 16.6% of people who voted for Bangledesh over Premo are.

Edit: When it comes to producing, I don't really think Q-Tip should've beaten Large Professor.

"MOST" of his posts. I can tell a bad Colt post from a good one... if he says something like "Cosign" or "****-5 stars" or starts to lend an opinion on 90s hip hop, you know you just want to keep scrolling down... he'll either end up going on some Dr. Phil type **** and will try to get all deep on us and kick knowledge or say some socially awkward things like "LS is a 7/10 album" that i just can't accept... anything else is safe though

well, if that's the way you feel.

Black Demon, TBT, Lakersman, and countless others co-sign with me on Liquid Swords...lol, when do I get on some Dr. Phil type **** and kick knowledge though? I need an example of this...you mean when I talk about what would make hip hop better? 'cause if so, I can understand...otherwise, I'm lost. btw, why would you scroll down if i'm on dr. phil mode....if nothing else, i've gotta be saying something somewhat interesting.

also on a scale of 1-10, how good was this post. use your judgment poozie, i know you can

When you're talking about hip-hop (how it should expand, what could make hip-hop better, etc.). I don't really bug out about when you rate albums and all that. Rob gets mad deep into it too...but he's a philosophy major so I can't front on that.

im on last.fm now, and I saw you listening to 'em...and said "who the **** is that?"....

uhhh, i love all funk/soul...who do you think I am?

man, hip hop should expand...there's so much out there, and hip hop just isn't letting itself diversify....we've got regional ****, specific sub-genres [jazz, gangsta, etc.], different flows...what about throwing in more genres...jazz was a start...r&b's always been there...the potential is there, and it's untapped. It should happen, and I think we're seeing the early beginnings of it....if a great crop of alternative rappers come out, and stay away from major record labels, I think we could see a great album sometime in the near future.
