His stepfather was a pastor and he was influenced by gospel music and christian rap actually
The fact that he mentioned his stepdad beating him in 'My World Is' and just seeing what he talks about leads me to think he might be an athiest though. That quote from So(ul) Amazin' really picks up on that point.
Either way I was just wondering since his music isn't anything great in my opinion. The five or so tracks I played all add the same slow, mellow, college hip hop feel to it. Which is a little boring.ghostphantom563....well, that's Blu for you.
So I broke most of Below the Heavens down and I would sooner say that Blu is Agnostic or Deist or someting like that. Since there's a number of lines that support philosophy and spirituality; however not exectly religion.
Blu's backround: As Toriko42 said his stepfather was a pastor, and Blu grew up to gospel and Christian rap.
The concept of 'soul/s' is mentioned a bunch of times, so I didn't get every line with "soul" in it.
Here is a list of lines of interest:
"A product of a God fearing pastor who was quick to whip my a$$ but his whoopins
Wasn't hot enough So I flo conscious but still rep the coochie monsters" - 'My World Is'
"And my mission's just beginning call it Genesis I'm God's Eye messenger but the Devil's nemesis It's no better predicament" - 'My World Is'
"The Narrow Path" as a whole has this whole light/dark theme, which could be about a number of things. However there are no lines in "The Narrow Path" that were no direct lines on religion/philosophy/spirituality.
"A scary existence this is, this tormenting felling make us win
If you got the power if you got the strength you will force your enemies down to the ground" - 'The Narrow Path'
"Through pain and suffering thou will find salvation the truth lies within; self-destructive evil complication" - 'The Narrow Path'
"Yo, the soul provider
got a lot on the skillet
grillin' it hard boiled, charcoal fillin' the dark villain
And the light skinded n***** disguised." - 'So(ul) Amazin''
"My peoples need hope, and I'm the one with it; the soul provider.
Cold as fire, hot as ice.
Rock the mic 'til I retire die the son of Christ.
Becoming one with life, to live like death is uncertain." - 'So(ul) Amazin''
"Heaven and hell I conquer which ever comes first.
Know to rebel.
My soul a la mode" - 'So(ul) Amazin''
"Sacred living.
Sinning like you can't forgive him.
Suspending time with my time spent rhyming about nonsense,
like saving religion." - 'So(ul) Amazin''
"See I remember when my folks said you'll know what I mean...
when you get older, I was only a teen
thinking that I was a grown up...PLEASE, I had so much to see
thinking the little that I saw was all the world had to offer to me
at 18 I had it of the streets without guidance
just the eyes of God watching over me it's time..." - 'In Remembrance'
"I got a call from a girl last week
She telling me about that time of the month and how it may not come
Dropped the phone right before she said I might have a son
And I started asking God how come
I got dreams I ain't reached yet - ends that ain't meet yet
When it comes to being a man, **** I'm barely getting my feet wet" - 'Good Life'
"And ain't no limit to the goals that you could hold in your mind'
Lift the soul when you crying 'till you reach the gates of heaven
Like your chariot is carrying children who going blind" - 'Good Life'
"...And **** hoes cause in the end I need a wife to love
Plus heaven is the life for us so God...[Song End]" - 'Good Life'
"I walk earth just like God works in mysterious ways" - 'Soul Rising'
"You get sparked by the God right here
my **** see the light like a bright idea" - 'Soul Rising' (Not 100% sure, that's how it goes)
"So now I'm spining fighting God, when I'm pisted" - 'Soul Rising' (Not 100% sure, that's how it goes)
"All 21 years of me
And no theres not a sucka that can strike fear in me
cause spitrually I know God here with me" - 'I Am..'
Then Below The Heavens Parts 1&2 have a bunch of lines in it here are some from Part 1.
"Yo, I'm tryin' to get this place that my grandpa told me bout as a child
Told me only few can make it and the faithless ain't allowed"
"I see it in the eyes of mothers when they uncover their sins and repent
Getting closer to Jehovah on they old knees bent
Praying our mind frames switch and our times change quick
But I hate to say it brother, the youth is too stubborn
To stuck on themselves to ever think about others"
"To a place my mom told me bout (hell)
Where your sins get cleansed cause they bathe in flames
And the only route out, is to shout out his name
I was trained to be a soldier for god
But as soon as I used my own thoughts
I kinda got lost in a small called reality
Where hell is a falacy
And heaven is a fantasy created by man
So don't believe in it
You came here with nothing
And you leavin' with nothing
So retreat from this world of deceitfulness
My people it's time to rise
Realize it's a heaven whether you think it's inside
Or in the sky reach for it
Before it's gone internally
And you're stuck here below the heavens for eternity"
