The Godfather of Soul has passed away :(

James Brown's work is probably the most sampled of any artist in the history of hip-hop. His song "Funky Drummer" is the single most sampled work in hip-hop, particularly Clyde Stubblefield's break late in the song.

THE greatest influence on hip hop. My uncle gave me 5 albums of James Brown awhile back and that's all I've been sampling. My uncle's gonna take it so hard he's like the biggest JamesBbrown fan. Alot of people only know him for I Feel Good and those songs but he is one of the most soulful singers and gets deep in his music

R.I.P. :(

Here's a break from James Brown- "Funky Drummer":
Funky Drummer

Listen to just a few of these songs and you'll hear the drums being used:
  • Eric B. & Rakim- "Lyrics of Fury"
  • LL Cool J- "Mama Said Knock You Out"
  • Public Enemy- "Bring the Noise"
  • Public Enemy- "Rebel Without a Pause"
  • Kool  Rap & DJ Polo- "It's a Demo"
  • Nas- "Get Down" (when the beat switches up a little after halfway through the song)
  • Ultramagnetic MC's- "Give the Drummer Some"
  • Pharcyde- "Officer"
  • Geto Boys- "Mind of a Lunatic" (you can even hear a little bit of James Brown's grunts over the beat lightly lol)
  • Big Daddy Kane- "Mortal Combat"

And here are some great live videos of James Brown videos off Youtube:

  • Sex Machine/ Soul Power (the loop of Boogie Down Productions- "Poetry" is on Soul Power)
  • Olympia 1966
  • Papa Don't Take No Mess/ My Thang

It was heart failure, which really isnt a shock because he destroyed his heart with all the drugs he did.
