Thanks for the heads up, I updated the link to a youtube video.
... and for the song, if Kanye and Wayne didn't use AutoTune on this song, it would have been so much better.
The verses aren't that bad alone. It's the M.I.A. sample beat that kills it for me though.

I concur.
I actually like this beat but they all could have better verses. It will probably grow on me.
Yeah, M.I.A is annoying, they should have got Wayne (also kind of annoying) or Jay to do the chorus and just used that beat. Im still pissed about the voice machines man. If I was a rapper, I would join up with Papoose to wage a war against auto tune users, myspace gangsta's and youtube thugs. 8)jubjub13
haha, I know man. If I ever hear E-40, or, moreover, Turf Talk using that ****, I dunno man, I think I'm done with rap.
Especially when I'm hearing people debating whether or not Kanye and Lil Wayne are "using it well" ... ****, I think what you're really debating is whether or not it makes them sound horrible or not. There's really no use for this thing in rap music ... do you guys understand what rapping is? You're not supposed to have a range of tones in your voice, otherwise you'd be a sanger. ****, if that's what you want, go listen to some Ja Rule or something. In the meantime I'm just gonna play some UGK.

I'm sorry, but how can you even say rappers are not supposed to have a range of tones in their voice...if that was true every rapper would sound like MF DOOM.I realize that; I'm saying, keep it to a limit. The only times you really should be using other pitches is on emphasized words and on the chorus. Plus, most rappers do actually rap at just one pitch throughout most or all of the song; Doom is just an exaggerated case of this. With Autotune half of these dudes are trying to hit notes one or two octaves out of their rapping range ... that's not what I want to hear.
[QUOTE="Colt45fool"]kanye is lame for being down with autotone. for real.fat_robbefore this point he was using it well, but it was so unneeded on this track...Only Autotone track, I really like is "Lollipop"...everything else it's used in is garbage, unless T-Pain's using it, in which case it's hit or miss.
"Lollipop Remix" was kinda lame...catchy, but I wish they didn't use the autotone...."My Life" should have been done without it...

Its funny when people get up in arms about s*** they don't know squate about. His defiition of real rap is very monotone then lol.My 2 cents, I like my music, whatever genre to be self-expression as long as it isn't wack. Rappers should have their own style and constantly tweak it. Whether it be tone, speed or whatever. Rappers should have some sort of Variety, it adds to the entertainment factor and adds longevity as well.
Not everybody wants to hear the flowless IT or monotone MF DOOM all the time.

But let me use an example, here, since I don't really think you guys are getting this. I just listened to Jay-Z's "Song Cry" off of "The Blueprint". I wasn't paying super close attention, but I'm pretty sure Jay doesn't change his pitch once in that track. Is anyone going to argue that this is a bad song? Lacking in emotion? No.
You see, the reason so many people are so quick to point out Doom's monotone is actually because of two factors - his voice and his delivery. I wouldn't doubt that most people here don't have a lot of formal music training, so I'm sure what a lot of you guys are confusing pitch with is actually delivery. Trust this, get me 100 rap acapellas and run them through a specral analyzer; I bet 99 of them are going to be one concrete pitch throughout.
According to your logic, "real rap" shouldn't be monotone, so have fun listening to "real rap" like Nelly and Ja Rule buddy.
Now, please don't be a broad and bail on me here, PLEASE tell me how I'm wrong here. I'm dying to know. Give me some real concrete proof that I'm wrong.

oh lord a monster has been disturbed form it's slumber. Run to the hillsThis thread is stupid. NOTHING is wrong with one pitch throughout a whole song. It's been working for 20+ years, why stop it now? :?

Its funny when people get up in arms about s*** they don't know squate about. His defiition of real rap is very monotone then lol. You can have different tones in your voice while you rap, but that's not what they're doing with the auto-tune. They're singing their lyrics, badly, to cause the distortion and IMO, singing has no place in hip hop.well obviously rappers do change the pitch of their voice when they rap, otherwise when kanye and lil wayne rapped with autotune it wouldnt sound all garbled.Constrobuz
No, I don't think you understand how Autotune works. You can either rap/sing monotone and use a keyboard to play the notes you "want" to sing, or you can sing the notes and play one long note with the keyboard. Either way, it's a carrier being ran through a modulator. If you set the correction speed to an excessive amount and play notes far out of your pitch, it creates that exaggerated, garbled sound (because it has to go from one pitch to such a different pitch in so little time). Now, I guess I didn't really need to explain all of that, but the point is, it really doesn't matter if you're using different pitches in your singing/rapping, the warbling sound is because of how quick the correction speed is going into effect. The only way to really offset this is to really know what notes to play on the keyboard, and, as far as I can tell, T-Pain is really the only one so far who seems to have any clue what he's doing.
But, while I'm at it, let me go back and clear one thing up; I realized earlier today that I did explain things kinda wrong earlier. When you call Doom "monotone", just look at that word - mono-tone. One tone. Tone is not the same thing as pitch. There's a reason why, when you play the same note and same pitch on a trumpet and then a piano, that it sounds different. It's because of the instrument's "tone". They are both playing the exact same pitch, right down to the frequency, but it's their "tonal" quality that seperates a trumpet from a piano. For a rapper, tone is determined mostly by, as I said earlier, your voice and your delivery. The point is that almost all rappers rap with one pitch throughout the song; the difference between them and Doom is that most of them vary their tone (E-40 comes to mind).
Now, don't me wrong; I'm not saying rappers should never use different pitches in their rap; Jay-Z used it to good effect on some of his older mainstream hits; this is just a long-winded argument that Autotune has no place in rap, especially when the people using it have no idea what they're doing.
