Seeing how this is most likely the last huge Hip Hop release of the year, I see it fitting to have a thread for it. It's also been almost a week since it came out and I expect most of us have heard it a few times by now so we can actually discuss it...

None of those garbo one word 'dope' or 'crap' posts, say why or why not...

Favorite tracks? Notes on it, whatever...

I mean really, most of the bangers on this track I heard way before the album came out and I still maintain that these songs are sick, some of the best to come out this year. Songs in this boat are All Eyes On Me and Kinda Like A Big Deal

My favorite tracks are as follows:

Freedom: Holy crap what an opening to the album, absolutely blew me away the first time I heard it and it sets the tone extremely well. Sean C and LV made a sick beat.

Kinda Like A Big Deal: I want more Khalil and Clipse together cause this beat is sick. Yeezy also killed his verse and it's just a sick song in general.

There Was A Murder: Another dope Khalil and Chin beat...Just a great song in general as well.

Door Man

Eyes On Me: Though the Neptunes weren't consistent on this album, this is one of the best beats on the album...Sick verses, sick flow, sick hook, I've loved this one all year...

Counseling

Footsteps: More Khalil??! More dopeness? I want to hear a full Khalil / Clipse album now but I doubt that'll happen. I love this song...My top song off the album I think or very close to it.

I like this album a lot like I said in another thead; it's in my top 5 of the year, maybe even top 3. The production is great for the most part, especially Khalil's tracks. I wasn't really expecting this to be good so I was surprised that I liked it so much. I usually prefer Pusha T, but Malice was the better of the duo this time around for the most part. I'll listen to Clipse rap about coke and money in the ceiling as long as they keep doing it.

I like how 95% of your review was about the beats. Thats cool though, that's what people (eg. 50 cent loving demograph) get into hip-hop for in the first place.....they just like the beats.

It's CLIPSE

I come for the beats, stay for the wordplay...The whole appeal of a Clipse album is the production which draws you in. That's why Hell Hath No Fury is so well lauded.

That's why people love Trill so much even though most of the lyrics are redundant

^^ I disagree. Clipse spit a LOT of hot ish in Hell Hath No Fury. Chinese New Year exhibits that quite well.

Too bad that was seriously lacking in this album, save for the last 2 tracks or so.

Good album that could've been great if it didn't falter pretty badly during the second half and towards the end.

Blander than usual Neptunes beats, some bad choruses and 2-3 bad songs.

Still enjoyed it though.

HaSheeSh_basic

Yeah, that is true but the reason why I always loved Chinese New Year moreso then anything else on the album was because

1. The production was onpoint and it drew me in
2. The lyrical content was sharp as hell

That's what I see Clipse as...They aren't something I go for lyrics right away

Are you talking about Bun B's album "Trill"? Because Bun B even at his most watered down is still a better rapper than 90% of other rappers out there, and sure as hell better than The Clipse ...

Noooo, this Trill

Everytime I hear about Clipse this song gets brought up and it's cause of the dope ass production which draws you in. Lyrically, it's not their greatest but Clipse gets their appeal with the production and to me, the longevity comes from the lyrical content, delivery, etc.

UGK's done it too though, In songs like 'Like That'

I have no issue with it though, in fact I love it. Sometimes I don't want my mind blown in Hip Hop, I just want something catchy and both these songs succeed in that

The thing about that UGK song, though, is that there is context for it. I could trace the lineage of Lil Jon and UGK if you want, but the point is, there's a reason that song was made. When Clipse deliver boring rap, it's just because they aren't very good rappers.

I have finally listened to this albums several times through, and I gotta say that I like it, but there are some tracks on it that had me saying WTF. When I first popped it in, I was amazed at the intro on this album. One of the best imo. The beat was dope, and the lyrics were on point. The next 3 or 4 songs were really good as well. The beats on this album are sick which is what I expect from a Clipse's album.

My issues with the album came when I heard "All Eyes on Me". The song itself isn't bad, but it is not something I expect to hear from self proclaimed "coke rappers" Clipse. It sounds like some Missy Elliot/Jermaine Dupree ish to me. I did not like hearing Keri Hilson singing on a Clipse track. The next two songs really went awry imo. "Counseling" and "Champion" are blasphemous to the Clipse name. Both songs are trash imo. Lyrically they are not that bad because even on a bad song Malice and Pusha are still able to deliver some nice lines, but the overall sound/concept of each song is just not what I want to hear from Clipse. It was as if they were trying to make this album more mainstream or commercial friendly with these 3 tracks.

Overall it is a good album, but like many albums coming out lately, there are some tracks keeping from being a great album imo. After hearing the first 3 or 4 songs, I thought this was going to be an amazing album because those tracks were so dope but oh well.Â
