Took a whole extra month but its finally here:
http://2dopeboyz.okayplayer.com/2009/06/19/wale-9th-wonder-back-to-the-feature-mixtape/
good to see some of the old 9th beats get someone over them, but most of the new 9th beats on here are so dullll, I like the Mark Ronson tracks on this though, and New Soul is dope too, not a bad tape...could have been betterWorstGameEver
That's discouraging; the one track I've heard from this so far I disliked because it was an old 9th Wonder beat (but that might just be because it wasn't one of his best). Regardless, I'm checking this out tonight for sure.
Edit: The fact that I see a Peter Bjorn and John cameo is even more discouraging.
I'm loving the new tape. A lot of the songs are old, some almost a year old now it seems, and there's a ton of guest spots (it is called Back to the Feature...) but I've been playing it nonstop since I got it.
Fave joints:
1. "Night Life" feat. Young Chris & Tre (prod. Mikey Mike)
"I mack hard, set it off on any song
my president is black, so is my credit card
without effort this is something you ain't fooling with
young Ben Gordon I play through all the bull****
and DC believing it
**** ya little sneakers, I got property in Beaverton"
One of the old joints that's been out for awhile now but its so sick. Tre murders the hook and I love the beat. Theme song8)
2. "Tito Santana" feat. Joe Budden (prod. 9th Wonder)
"Now you know how son be
come see thousand dollar dungarees
kicks fly, closet like Chun-Li
punk me, we'll see who the punk be
you just serving yourself, go pull up to pump 3"
-Joe Budden
Wale and Budden killed this
3. "New Soul" feat. Yael Naim (prod. Best Kept Secret)
"sideway *****s keep trying to make them bishop moves"
Wale still has the most chemisty with Best Kept Secret out of all his producers... BKS's drums own hard.
Â
4. "The Sun" feat. Memphis Bleek (prod. 9th Wonder)
"Because I'm popular to bloggers and pirates
the ignorant downgrade me to average
but they don't even know half of the rapper
so they threw me in the skinny jeans crew
'cause I rap about **** that the people really do"
It sounds like he's describing Colt lol. Colt used to think the same way about Charles Hamilton too and now look at him:P
5. "Wordplay" feat. Curren$y and Tre (prod. 9th Wonder)
"play me for a stepping stone then I landmine"
Laid back song but its dope. Sounds kind of unusual for a 9th production, especially the drums. This is another one of the songs that's been out forever...
what are some of the old 9th Wonder beats? I know "Say It Again" feat. Royce was on 9th's Jay-Z Black Album remix project: What More Can I Say (9th Wonder Remix). I feel like I've heard them I just don't know where they're from.
The fact that I see a Peter Bjorn and John cameo is even more discouraging.

Who are these dudes lol. I'm guessing some indie rockers because thats what they sound like. Drake had them on So Far Gone as well, and that song stuck out like a sore thumb even more so than the screwed and chopped song on that mixtape...
The song they're on with Wale is miles better than the one on the Drake mixtape though.

yeah pretty much. Though they have some good songs, I just don't like hearing them on a Wale song lol
You might have heard this before Young Folks

the bjorn song with drake is dope, you need to fall back
wordplay is amazing, the beat is so dope, i loved it since it was on nahright like four months ago
wale needs to do all his production with best kept secret, for REAL. by FAR the best producer for wale; dude is just an amazing producer in general.
it was just impossible to top mixtape about nothing, which would probably be a top 10 album (of all-time) if it was an album, so i was going to be disappointed no matter what he did. i gotta sit on it a little bit before i get into it again.
that said, if the album isn't 90% BKS i'ma be pissed

Word. You might be going a little too far with the Mixtape About Nothing, but still, I'm glad to see someone else who realizes just how amazing that mixtape is - honestly, it's the only non Jay-Z east coast rap record from this decade that I can think of that's worth a damn.

lol what? the infamous 9th snare is right there. the bongos and whatnot are probably in the sample.

I realize the trademark snare is there but the sample just doesn't sound like anything I've really heard 9th use before. It's like 9th's attempt at making a go-go sounding beat. By drums I was referring to the bongos, guess I should've clarified that more.
