Numbers don't lie.....sometimes....LOL
Yeah, kinda depends what you mean. If it is in terms of sales and popularity, it's undoubtably Eminem.
However, if it's who we think is going to have a bigger legacy, in Hip-Hop, when it's all said and done, I'd say Jay-Z hands down. Personally, I think he's had a bigger impact on the genre overall, but I think I'm in the minority.
I disagree; I think Eminem has had a much bigger impact on the genre, or, at least on the musical side. Jay-Z, I suppose you could say, has impacted the genre in the entrepreneurial sense, but Eminem, with his mass popularity, has changed the genre by making it more accessible, pop-friendly, ect. However, if it's who we think is going to have a bigger legacy, in Hip-Hop, when it's all said and done, I'd say Jay-Z hands down. I did say I'd be in the minority
I think Jay's done more musically because his music has more quality and substance overall. In my opinion, Em's had one, as much as I like TES and SSLP, I wouldn't consider them classic. I know Em's sales have always been dominated that of every other rapper, but I don't think he's as consistent as Jay musically.
Jay's albums have a better balance between being commercially successful and being well-received critically, again in my opinion.
Plenty of other artists have made the genre accessible and pop friendly before Eminem - take Run DMC and MC Hammer.
It is indeed close, but I still place Jay above Em in terms of whose legacy as a rapper will be "bigger".

eminem has made it more accessible but Jay-z has actually influenced how many rappers rap...the first thing that pops in my head is Drake on You Know, You Know...he sounds like a Jay-z clone damn near.Â
something to consider...maybe Em's style is harder to emulate? Jay-Z is a (pardon the football analogy) "prototypical" rapper. Do
hold that against him?
Anyone that thinks Em has had a bigger musical impact is sniffing coked laced with Cascade ... so many rappers were Jay-Z clones at one point that it literally was vomit inducing.Â

Plus most people to this day add Jay-Z as #3 behind Biggie and Pac in the cliche Best Rappers or Favorite Rappers list.
^^^ Em gets lots of love from rappers too, but you hear more Jay-Z influence in their writing. Em is unique in a lot of ways ... even though he has a very linear style.fat_robwhat does that even mean lol?

[QUOTE="MoetWitMedusa"]Jay Z has a classic Eminem does not. Therefore Jay> EminemApocalypse33that's debatable...

I was born with a dick in my brain, yeah, **** in the head"I don't know what the **** up with this kid"Â
Â
Im sorry but lyrics like that is why I can never be an Eminem fan. If Jay wrote lyrics like that he'd get laughed out of the music business while Eminem gets praised for that garbage. Â
how is this even debatable?Â
Jay-Z is an icon. Em was great, but lettuce be reality...20 years from now, people will mention Eminem, but Jay-Z will always be listed with the greats....not just in rap history, but in music history. Really, who else has raped the music industry from the rap genre like Jay-Z has for as many years as he has? You can talk Biggie, and Pac all you want in mainstream America, but those dudes were popular for five years max. Jay's been the most popular thing in his genre for pushing 20 years....even when he was "retired." That's some Bob Dylan, Michael Jackson, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Beatles, type ****. Â

Fixed. How can you argue with that?

he has 2 maybe 3. But his catalogue is much bigger too. He has more flops than em too.

Even if you say he has two (even though three are widely considered classics), Eminem still has one at a push.
What do you mean by flop? We've already established Em's a bigger seller.[QUOTE="Apocalypse33"][QUOTE="djwestwood"]that's debatable...[QUOTE="Apocalypse33"][QUOTE="MoetWitMedusa"]Jay Z has THREE classics Eminem does not. Therefore Jay>>> Eminemdjwestwood

The second point might be true in your opinion, but when it's all said and done an artist (more often than not) will be remembered by the amount of good music they made rather than the bad. IMO, Jay has more good music than Eminem.

I think TES is still his masterpiece.co-sign. nobody remembers krs-one for the **** he dropped in the 2000s...He has more albums because he's a bigger contributor to the genre.
