hey i was watching tv and this commercial came up about one of those dating websites. and it said that 1 in 5 relationships start on an online dating site. now i know that they are getting more and more common and stuff, but doesnt that seem like too much? 1 in 5 is a lot isnt it?

While my brother did indeed meet his wife online, I think this statistic is a bit exaggerated.

I'd imagine many people kick it off on facebook or other social networking sites so it's not just the dating websites.

This is what I was thinking. I'd also wonder what the success rate of those "1 in 5" is.

They probably count everyone the person gets matched with as a relationship. There's no way 1 in 5 are started online.

True that, it would never work out wouldn't it?

My old roomate just got engaged to a girl he met from a dating site. I think for younger generations it might be plausable but most ppl 30+ prob met IRL.

True that, it would never work out wouldn't it?

Why wouldn't it work?

I actually think relationships that start online via a dating site have a BETTER chance at sucess than ones started just IRL.

Thing is, you are being much more picky in an online scenario, and you are also presented right up front with a TON of aspects of their personality and are more or less left to judge them MAINLY on their personality, rather than just starting and chatting up some cute girl/guy you meet at a bar.

I am actually getting ready to ask a girl out here that I started talking to via a dating site. We have clicked amazingly well and up till she recently lost her phone charger, we were teting eachother incessantly. It has been absolutely wonderful talking to her and I have alot of faith that we could potentially have a very sucessful relationship.

And probably 90% of those never go further than being online.

Lol:lol:

The funny thing is I get the impression she is a bit tech savvy. She has an RSS feed (something I had no idea what it was till she explained it to me...), mods her version of the Sims, and actually had an interest in doing graphic design/animation.

Maybe it's more like "Hey, he's my facebook friend/a friend of my friend on facebook, maybe I should talk to him". It doesn't specifically say which type of relationship.

My wife and I met online and have been happily married for 11 years now. I'm not too sure if the high divorce rate is due to meeting someone online. I think there are bigger factors involved there.

I'm guessing it was an online dating site? I think that's a rather high estimate.

For the younger crowd i think that's possible. For the older crowd that's a bit of a scretch.

Doesn't sound too out of place for me. That figure will only go up as the web spreads throughout the world and more people gain access.

My newly retired manager just married a man she met online at the age of 65.

So I don't think it's as rare as I thought it was, nor exclusive to the younger generation, and I suppose it's not surprising since many people have been using the internet for a long time now. A lot of them probably meet through games and things as well (WoW  )
