Some things come to mind with this news.

Rich people basically rule the world, they set the rules on which society operates and we all just follow whatever the status quo tells us is the best way to live, to progress, to develop, etc.

Rich people also think it is cool to spend $11 million decorating a tree.

From both statements it follows that we live in most absurdly stupid world possible.

Human kind really couldn't get more pathetic if it tried.

Well then, shouldn't you just be joyful that it isn't your money?

You don't have to be rich to recognize that is one cool tree.

"oh no, people are spending their money on what they want, how dare they!"

It's weird and perhaps unnecessary, but damn OP, you need to lighten up.

And that's actually a pretty awesome tree.

I don't understand why you're so angry. Someone spent $11 million of their money on a tree. How does this affect you ?

Oh gosh I came in here losing my faith in humanity and the first few comments just confirmed it :P Is not about the damn tree people, read between the lines, it is about the principle of having a world in such a state and people spending $11 million on a Christmas tree. When people no longer can see the absurdity behind it all I think we are doomed. Maybe we deserve it.

If I had 11 Mil to spend on a Christmas tree, I probably would too. That thing is impressive.

So what would be a better use of $11 million if not going towards the salaries of the craftsmen, jewelers, deliverers, shippers, customs agents, loggers, pilots, and anyone else involved in the creation of this thing?

Actually after reading that news I was wondering how would I react if I had that much money and power? would I keep what I consider my lucidity or would I just turn into another absurd rich monkey? I really don't know I guess I would have to be there to see although I hopefully wouldn't. Maybe so much power just does that to people. Doesn't mean it is less absurd or pathetic though.

It's the hotel adminstrations money and they can spend it in any darn way they please. No one is obligated to give away all of their earnings to a good purpose in anyway, and no one in the society has any right to whine about it, since it is the society which made the hotel what it is today.

The thing is, if someone had a huge thing for legos, and a million or more dollars they earned to spend on whatever they want, I would have no problem with them spending it all on legos. It's their money, they can spend it on whatever they want, regardless if you think it's pathetic. Besides that, that's $11 million more dollars into the economy.

Yeah. Hotels spend a lot of money on their lobbies. It looks like that entire building is pretty expensive.

i know politicians are rich but not all rich people are politicians. politicians make the laws they rule the world and what is wrong if a rich person spends his/her money on something? they get the pleasure of that something and all of the providers get their pay in exchange.

Not everybody follows the rich peoples' rules. Criminals don't.

From this statement, I can conclude that you believe the world at this exact time has reached maximum stupidity. Therefore, the world in--let's pick a random date here--1115 was less stupid than it is now. What exactly qualifies today (Thursday) as being the most stupid ever?

Because the world was never as globalized as it is now so the stupidity is almost generalized. We are also much more people than ever before and for society to work on such high numbers you need stupid people follow rules without much questioning more than ever before. And paraphrasing Einstein: human stupidity is the only infinite thing in the universe. I think it will just keep growing and growing until we are all dead of course.

Did you read the rest of the article? It costs a million dollars for a seven day stay at that hotel. Absolute bargain - I'm adding it to my Christmas list :D

At first i thought "damn that tree must have diamonds on it"

ok i was surprised and it actually does :|

Instead of creating something like a building in the shape of a christmas tree, and only decorate it when its christmas they went and bought a damn tree that will be useless in 2 months and stuffed it with shiny useless crap.

Great business move. They'll probably sell all the jewelry afterwards, the tree itself was 'only' 10,000. And that will be more than paid for with all the nice publicity they're getting.

Isn't it a good thing that rich people are spending money? I'd rather have them spend tons of their money than just hoard it. Now, you can make the argument that someone shouldn't be rich to begin with, but that's a whole different discussion.

I'm pretty sure someone spent $11 million on art in real life, and not for make-believe. I do not understand your definition.
