@mrbojangles25: So what words next to get that kind of power? What if I'm offended by the word "stupid" now that we've given the R word that much power? Or "dumb", that word highly offends me!!! Nobody should ever use it again!!! Its beyond silly to let a simple word have that much control and power...opps I used the word "silly", that could potentially offend people also now.
If its against the sites rules to use a certain word I'll do so, but where do we draw the line, at what point do we stop banning words because it hurt a few peoples feelings?
You're being obtuse. There's no slippery slope here. there's no "what's next?!" to worry about; stupid people come in all shapes and sizes and so on and so forth--anyone can be stupid--but the intellectually disabled have very specific issues and the r-word refers to them in a derogatory way, even when you don't mean to.
If you say 2+2=5, you're stupid. It doesn't matter if your 10 or 80 years old, a high school drop out or a PhD holder, or normal person or a mildly intellectually disabled person...you're stupid if you say that.
But if you call that person the r-word, you're associating the intellectually disabled with being stupid, which is far from what they actually are.
It's simply a word you just don't use any more. That's all. I mean when was the last time you called a black person a "negro"? 1950? Same thing with the r-word.
Let it go, dude.
