I would believe it if the Mayan's were actually able to predict the end of their civilization... and didn't record dates beyond 2012 (like October 21st, 4772).

Actually when the Mayan's who calculated the time it took for the earth to revolve around the sun to the 10 decimal point, which we didn't achieve untile the 1900s. And their calender end in 2012, they may be onto something.

Problem is their calendar does NOT end in 2012. It "resets" to a new "long count." It goes from 12.19.19.17.19 to 13.0.0.0.0. It doesn't just stop. Not to mention there are dates recorded in Mayan sources that are well beyond 2012 (such as 4772)

I don't think there is anyway science could be untrustworthy... Unless maybe all of the scientists were determined to lie to us for some reason. Science uses observations to come up with theories about how the world works. Obviously those theories aren't always right but that's no reason to give up science.

This whole "end of the world" deal comes from the absurd combination of the Pre-Columbian Mayan myth of the "end of the fourth world" (supposedly a period of time related to their Creation myth) combined with the extremely rare astronomical event where the Sun crosses the galaxial equator and some odd alignment of the planets.

The world will not be ending. The human race will eventually end (either by killing ourselves or die out through evolution) but the planet will remain intact until our Sun goes Red Giant. The only reason people try to "predict" when it will end is so they can say "called it" when it happens.

The way I see it, there are two options:

1. We're all gonna die; or

2. We're not all gonna die.

In case #1 there isn't anything you can do to prevent it and in case #2 there isn't anything to be prevented, so either way there's not much sense in worrying about it.

I'm still gonna hold on to the possibility. I mean, you never know considering all the tension going on these days with nuclear weapons and global warming among other things. I know it's just a .0001% chance it really will be the end of the world but I just think it might be cool if it happens, like it would be a scene in a movie or something.

Well, I think I've found the source of all this hubbub surrounding December 21st, 2012 and its relation to Mayan myth...

From Mayanism article on Wikipedia:

"The significance of this date in Mayanism stems from the ending of the current baktun cycle of the Maya calendar in 2012, which many believe will create a global "consciousness shift" and the beginning of a new age. This concept was introduced by New Age spiritual leader JoséArgüelles in his book The Mayan Factor (1987) and promoted at the 1987 Harmonic Convergence. The astronomical conjunction of the black hole at the center of the galaxy with the winter solstice Sun on December 21, 2012, referred to by John Major Jenkins in Galactic Alignment as having been predicted by the ancient Maya and others, is a much-anticipated event in Mayanism."

It does predict a strange event yes,and more of a beggining of a new age, thus meaning an end to the other...but the strange thing is that it's not only the mayan calendar...there are egyptian calendars also that don't go beyond the year 2012 meaning, when cultures were not even aware of each others existance, they both came to the same conclusion = 2012,something else begins.NASA has also calculated that a meteor is coming our way (2km radius),and by today's calculations,it should hit earth around the 12-13 February 2013.Well,either something is going to happen,or it won't...guess we'll just have to wait... :D

There is science to support the prediction that the world will end in 2012?gobo212

Apparently on 12/21/2012 the planets and sun will align in such a way that they could move Earth's poles resulting in massive shifting of tectonic plates and drastic climate change. And apparently there us scientific evidence that something like that has happened before.

Haha! Indeed. Prehaps the lack of a race track (we are severely behind on construction, we've not even started building yet, just demolishing) will send fans insane and cause a global, nuclear riot, with London being the first place to be flattened because of it's lack of motivation

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Let's get back on track here. If the world is going to end in 2012 then how many more generations of gaming consoles will we get?? Two??

Also, does this mean I should cash out my 401K and enjoy it since I evidently won't need retirement?? Can I stop paying taxes?? I'm beginning to think the end of the world could be the best thing that will ever happen to me.
