Not a shamed about it, infact as you can tell I make it publicly known, question is how do I conquer this? Ever since I was little i'v hated the dark, not knowing whats around, not being able to see, feeling helpless. Scary feeling for me, and one that has been troubleing me for years, so if anyone as any tips, hints and ideas of getting me off this fear without the need of 'special care' (I.E support from doctors/psychiatrist etc) let me know. : )

You really should not be afraid. Most creatures can't see properly in the dark, so think of the darkness as a cloak hiding you.

I'm 18 and it creeps me out a bit. Mostly just walking around my house in almost complete pitch black darkness.

I very much doubt you're going to like any of the responses you get here. Most people will say, just turn off the lights. Just go to a therapist and get it done with. That's your best option at any rate.

I always listen to a comedic podcast. For me, laughing through it works.

Plus, anyone else run like hell to bed when they close the lights in say the kitchen or somewhere? I feel like someone is behind me, but its just my imagination.

Try not to think about it. That really helps. Get something on your mind beside how dark it is. I recently conquered my fear of the dark about two years ago and I remember that being the main reason why. Of course this is just me and I might be insane.

I get that feeling when I turn off all the lights and go up to bed.

When I was in the AIr Force I had to go down and bring food, or dispatches, into this bunker where officers sat and waited for an order to launch our ICBMs. And there was no light until you opened the blast door and a little red light indicated that it was open. Really creepy riding back up the elevator in the dark. I always brought my flashlight.

/has a Playskool nightlight in my room. It's on almost all the time, even though I get a better sleep in complete darkness because it's just too dark in the basement with no light. I have a lot of stuff everywhere in my room, so it's just safer to have a light so I can get in and out without stumbling over something. When I freak myself out with a scary movie or something I fall asleep with the TV on (sleep timer, though) so that I have some light and sound.

It's not the dark you're scared of.

it's whatever religious, fantastical or superstitious elements that inhabits the darkness that frightens you.
Quell your belief on those elements and you'll see there's nothing to be afraid of.

I'll be honest: only time I'm scared of the dark is the thought of slamming into something or falling over something. I once did both in one shot; I tripped over a box and smashed my arm on the counter corner while on the phone with somebody. All they could hear was a gasp, followed by a grunt, and the crash of the phone hitting the floor. Rather funny for them, actually.

But yeah. Personally, I'm not scared of the dark, but it is a primal fear all species have. Fear of that which you can't see or properly identify. Plus, when you see the moon reflecting off your cat's eyes and just a silhouette of them in the dark, followed by a hiss... yeah, you'll get a little scared of what's lurking in the darkness. :|

I was afraid of the dark up until the point, while walking across the living room to turn the lights on, I stubbed my toe. It was then I realized the dark is nothing compared to the pain I feel right now.

Man, you focused on the most irrelevant portion of my post. Let me rephrase it without those words and maybe you won't get side-tracked on the meaning:

"it's whatever elements that inhabits the darkness that frightens you."

Do you live by yourself?

Edit: I don't mean that as an insult, but I think it could play a counter-intuitive role here.

Hey man Im 21 and I still have an eerie feeling of the dark, who doesn't. It is probably because i live in a 100 year old house that I think is haunted, and others who have stayed here say they had paranormal experiences, like someone whispering right behind them and they turn around and no one is there.

I don't fear the dark but it is rather uncomfortable. Being in the dark while in the ocean is really scary. Last summer some of my friends and I were at the beach and decided to do go into the ocean at night. We swam out pretty far to where we couldn't even guess how deep it was since we couldn't feel the bottom. I wasn't that freaked out at the time but I've had some crazy dreams about that scenario a couple times since

i think i was still "rushing back to my room from the bathroom in the middle of the night" until I was 17 or so. And just over winter break I was walking through the park around 1am smokin a J and idk if i was just getting paranoid, but the path suddenly became very dark and my mind started imagining what would happen if a man just happened to also be on that path at 1am. Needless to say, i turned around and walked back to my house as calmly as possible

Could being afraid of the dark be a natural fear everyone has so they don't get killed by night predators or something?

Two ways to get home at night: Through an alley where you can barely see you hand in front of your face or on a brightly lit sidewalk along side the street but this route takes 10 minutes longer.

You bet your ass I'm going to take that sidewalk every time.

That's like telling someone who has OCD to just stop it. They realize that what they're doing is irrational, they just can't stop it.

Install motion activated lighting in your home. I'm assuming when you say that you are afraid of they dark you mean you are afraid of what's hiding in it. So, if you install motion activated lighting in every room in your home, you will be instantly alerted to unknown presences in your home. Further, if you ever feel frightened at night, you can just wave your hands and see everything in the room.

Simply saying scared of the dark isn't accurate for me... I prefer the dark in my home... However, the dark in unfamiliar places creep me out big time and I'm 23...

Everybody has fears (for me, it's insects and deep water), but you just have to learn to not give into the fear. Just don't think about it and you will get through it. If you are afraid of the dark, do something to get your mind off it.
