I know there's probably been enough threads about this already sorry but I thought the 300 wasn't that spectacular.

It was like a teenager wrote the screenplay and directed it. The triumphant moments were kinda corny and juvenile. ANyone else think it wasn't as good as they thought it would be?

That's the problem, take any hormone driven teenage boy and they'll love this film. That's a big part of the  target audience. Pisses me off that movies that COULD be epic are created for young audiences.

This was also really a chick flick when it wasn't a juvenile teen flick.  Chicks could go stare at the beefcake and be totally happy that the feminine lead role slept with a council member like a slut then killed him after when he called her on it.

It was a pretty good movie, but people talk about it like it's the greatest movie ever made.  It was fun to watch but it's far from the best movie ever.

Well the battle of Thermopolae did really happen, I mean I accept your opinion that its overated but for all the violence and sex, thats how people were back then, don't say it was to violent and brutal.

No I'm fine with sex and violence. And in fact the violence in it was done tastefully. The blood looked animated and there wasn't a lot of close ups of mortal wounds or excess bodily fluids leaking out post mortem.

I'm just saying the movie just wasn't that good. It was good if you're a kid and don't really care about emotions being portrayed properly or depth of character.

And how stupid is it that an ancient Greek says "We're in for one wild night". What are they at a rave party? Is that how people were back then? Hip and full of catchy phrases in the face of mortal peril? THAT was definitely written for a modern, stupid, attention deficit young audience.  I don't care if that's how it was said in the "hype hype hype graphic comic". Ohh Frank Miller's graphic comic, Frank Miller Frank Miller you HAVE to like it, it was FRANK MILLER! Come on he did Sin City,  you HAVE to like it!

You asses had no idea who the hell Frank Miller was before Sin City just like me, quit pretending you love him lol.

Actually Spartans were trained since they were 7 to become vicious, yet disciplin and smart fighters. They spent their whole childhoods enduring the toughest training on earth. People underestimate how violent and smart people were in ancient times.

They knew they were all going to die but they wanted glory forever, and they saved Greece, and Democracy.

i agree. the director's capability is severely lacking to handle the genre of historical epic, which requires much more than visceral actions. 300 simply fails to evoke the ethos that draw the serious audience into its dimension. and to be honest, for a film that relies heavily upon voice-over, the lines are very poorly written.

the only good things about the film is its CGIed photographing and the action. these, of course, are not enough. a handful of other directors have tried their hands on this genre with much more effort. Troy follows the Homerian tradition of scrutinizing human destiny; Alexander pays deliberate attention to narration and character development. granted, these films are not as commercially successful as 300, but they at least have enough content to create a lasting impression. and let's not forget Gladiator, which to me remains the best greco-roman epic film for the past 2 decades.

all in all, 300 is, to me, a mindless piece of work that i gladly left behind when i walked out of the cinema.

I like the color saturation and grany effect on the film. The fight scenes were very visceral. I liked the narration. Other than those 3 things, this movie was pretty mediocre in story, character, and  character development.

True and I'd like to assist you and say that the persian empire was as great as the greek empire maybe better and it's so shallow to picture persians as orcs and monsters as an exaggeration. Besides including fictional characters it aimed to provoke a certain region due to it's active nucler plan. But not by screwing their history.... greeks where as bad as persians backthen.

I thought it was ok, I probably would have liked it more if it wasn't hyped so much before though, would have made a great sleeper film, but I was so tired of hearing about it that I looked for ways to make it worse than it probably was...
