I just learned about this thing today, had to share.  Evidently there's a 200ft wide crater in Trukmenistan that's been on fire for 40 years.

It's a third world muslim country nobody has ever heard of. 80% of it is extremely dry desert. It's a single-party state.

So yeah, a burning hole in the ground is probably the only interesting thing about it.

that is an extremely ignorant statement. You can't even tell who's from where for you to be claiming that. Given i live in the U.S and i've only traveled to my native country but the amount of ignorance world wide about almost everything here is mind blowing and compelling at the same time considering we have bad education the rest of the world is incredibly gullible to everything they hear about us. We wake up in the morning to go to work btw... most people don't go to work. July 4th is a day to enjoy a BBQ and fire works for the most of us. Most of us aren't even saything this is the best country in the world. If we take population and provide percentages rather than numbers i'm pretty sure U.S.A isn't as patriotic as a lot of other modern countries... it is a huge country with a huge population so taking 1 million persons from here is easy as cake as comparing to let's say chile who's population is less than 20m.

In 1971, Soviet scientists are drilling oil in that spot, but there was an accident, turns out to be a gap of methane gas below the rig, boom it goes, and voila! a large 24/7 burning hole,it won't stop burning from that year, even today

Wikipedia says they tried to extract the methane from the ground, but it eventually collapsed into a crater and they felt the safest thing was to burn it, rather than allow methane to escape into the air/atmosphere. They didn't think it would burn for decades.

You think countries like Afghanistan and Pakistan are safe for Americans? Hell, they aren't even safe for their own citizens.
