Survey: More US homes go landline-free

From the article:

More than 4 in 10 American homes are landline phone-free and relying exclusively on cellphone service, according to a government survey released Tuesday.

That’s an increase over recent years, yet the growth of cellphone-only households might be slowing over time, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention concluded.

The 41 percent of households without a landline telephone account for nearly 93 million adults and almost 35 million children across the country.

People under 30, houses with several unrelated roommates, poorer residents and Hispanic people were more likely to be relying solely on their cellphones.

Nearly 9 percent of American households had only landline service, without wireless access.

Among households with both landline and cellphones, about a third said that all or nearly all of their calls came in through their cellphones.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  1. OT do you have a landline phone in your house?
  2. Are you "cell phone exclusive" in your home?

Yeah, I kinda wish I had a landline since I don't get excellent reception in my room and sometimes have to move. But I haven't had one since like the last time I used 56k.

Very interesting. However I still believe talking on landlines is superior. Don't have to worry about reception or dead battery.

Landlines are superior in more isolated areas than cell phones, but the ability to actually communicate in a much broader range is simply more valuable to mobile societies.

I have never had my own land line. I have used cell phone exclusively since I moved from my parents. They still have a land line but use cell phones mostly.

Makes sense I guess. I know in some places you need a landline to be able to get a mortgage which is just silly to me.

All I have is my cell phone. Considering that I have my cell phone on me at all times I have never really had a need for a landline.

If only somehow we could get the same amount of people to cut the cord, but that's a different topic.

Only reason I have a landline is because when I switch between Verizon cable and Cablevision I have to have a landline in order to get the monthly discount. No way am I paying $200 a month for cable and internet when I can pay $120 for cable, internet and phone for two years. Then switch to the other company when they offer me the discount.

@Serraph105: I would love to cut the cord on satellite and cable tv but data caps prevent that. I tryed and ending up spending the same money after overage charges.

  1. yes
  2. no (are you freaking kidding me ? )

That kind of shit is unbelievable.A household without landline phone is another form of asking all of the residents to use cell phones ,obviously advanced cell phones (so called smart phones I mean). Not every one is up to that kind of shit around here.

And that makes getting connected to the internet pretty difficult.Around here ,at least.

Could you explain further why not having a land line means you need a smartphone? Or why it's asking others to do the same? Where I'm at you can have just home wifi, and a non-smartphone if you wish without (as far as I know) effecting anyone else.

Well ,that's just a perfect solution ,now that I come to think of it.You can get you're PC connected to the internet using WiFi ,and your cell-phone can replace landline phone ,and you don't need a smart phone or shit.(however if you do ,apps like Viber will just make things easier ; you won't need to pay charges for Viber calls.)

Yeah that's a good idea , I wasn't thinking straight. However I don't see that happening in my country ,landline here is a steady tradition that can't be crossed out easily, over and beyond being fundamental for WiFi.

We still have a landline for the single reason that my family back in Portugal can do international calls to landlines for free, so they can call me at no cost: otherwise I never use it.
