http://www.gamepolitics.com/2009/03/02/report-5-year-old-stabs-sister-over-nintendo-ds

We haven't seen any English language coverage of this yet, but always-reliable European reader Soldat Louis has forwarded us this report of an incident which apparently occurred yesterday in the small French village of Uckange:

A 5-year-old boy stabbed his 10-year-old sister because she didn't want to give him her Nintendo DS. Her mother, who has sole custody of the children, was sleeping at the time and was alerted by her daughter's screams.

The girl is still at the hospital, but she's not in mortal danger. The boy is aware of what he's done. He said to the police that his sister didn't want to give hime her Nintendo DS, and that he thought the knife was a toy. I've also read that he apparently likes the game "Power Rangers", in which the characters (alledgely) throw knives.

The mother of the 2 children has been raising them since the father abandoned them and fled to Albania. According to her, he was violent to the point of hitting her. She works at night to raise her children, and while she's at work, her brother and her niece babysit them.

2: How the hell can you not tell the difference between a toy knife and a real one?.....

I KNEW the Power Rangers were out to get everyone...

Sad that a 5 year old would do that...and know where to get a knife.

I hope the blame isn't put on the Mother, she obviously loves her kids, and is working very hard to raise them. I think the blame should fall on the dad gone AWOL. The son obviously learned off his father that Violence solves everything.

How much stupidity can the world take. I know that the boy was 5-years old, but he still didn't have a right to stab his sister just for a stupid reason like that.

This doesn't sound very strange, there are probably hundreds of cases every day where 5-year olds get temper tantrums and starts biting or throwing stuff they shouldn't throw.

Why is that ridiculous? Regardless of item, the intent was the same on the individual's part--the intent was to cause harm. It's not as though they were two people joking around. He intentionally stabbed her.

Am I a bad person for laughing at this? But on a serious note what baffles me is that the kid claims he thought it was a "toy" knife, I mean seriously how could you mistaken a sharp pointy object for a toy? HOW? Oh God

So let me get this straight: It took a good 17 years for Power Rangers to get blamed for violence among children despite the rangers using martial arts, guns, melee weapons, and killer robots. Well, it was a nice run guys. :(

Yeah, and most of them don't stab their sisters.

I kind of have a hunch that the word "stabbing" was used only to attract attention to the "article"... but I can't be sure. I was glad to hear that the girl would be alright, and hopefully she wasn't too badly hurt. Unfortunately, the article gave very few details about what really happened.

And I'm not saying that it's common in a normal household, most kids have learned by the age of 2 that using knives and hitting your sisters is a big NO-NO. I'm saying that a lot of hospitals probably only shrug their shoulders when they hear about stuff like this.

This.

Kids do this type of **** all the time, they get in fights over toys and the like, I remember hurting my brothers occasionally over stupid little things.

Edit: It didn't help that they were originally raised in a violent household with a violent father. That's probably how the 5 year old knew where to find a knife.

Intentionally stabbing someone with a rubber knife when you KNOW it is a rubber knife isn't different from stabbing someone with a real knife when you THINK it's a rubber knife.

Are you kidding me? Knives are a common household item. Knowing where the knives are is about as strange as a kid knowing where the dish detergent is. The knives are in the kitchen along with the pots and pans and spoons.

Why you blame music? I hear it and I don't go kill and stab persons, only if you believe in the lyrics and in the hate and let yourself get controled by it.
I think people these days are more violent. Kids mostly.

You expect a five year old to be able to tell the difference between the toy and the real thing? Either way, I think it's not too bad. The mother was sleeping, so I don't blame her. The sister wouldn't give him the DS, so that's a little bratty, but normal. The brother of course, stabbed his sister, but it was nothing too bad, and really, I blame the abusive father and Power Rangers.

No difference. The fact is he doesn't know better, and his father, the ONE man he respected more than anybody abused his wife. Plus, last time I checked, a knife is the Power Rangers' main weapon.

Well he's five years old. Five year olds are usually stupid so I can't really blame him. Really you can't blame anyone here.

EDIT: Well I guess Canada is really at fault here.
