Cracked has been going downhill lately, but I thought this was a pretty enjoyable article from Cracked because it's pretty true, especially 4, 2 and 1. In the explanation of item 2, the author talks about people who think their biases don't influence them, but I'd go as far as to say that some people (wrongly) think they don't have biases at all.

When frustrated and in a rush, I've probably been guilty of the "other drivers are jerks!" double standard. I try not to think like that tho.

How about just general "contempt for the masses"? I can't count how many times I've seen stuff along the lines of "wake up *insert presumably sleeping thing*!" on the Internet (and to a certain degree on this forum). The ironic thing of course is that the authors of such statements are almost always completely unaware of their own bigotry and ignorance about the very things they condemn others for. I'd go as far as to say this line of thinking is one of the most dangerous around.

Way to point out the obvious. That we're all self-centered, captain metrosexual hipster. . . . But I do like me some Cracked. Even if you don't, I do. And I'm special and unique.

Ugh, I hate the **** out of the "wake up!" comments. It's so unbelievably condescending.

4 - I think that's just the US, there's been quite a few comedians who have criticised US audiences that it's all good until you make fun of them. Also you don't tend to get comedians relying on stereotypes over here, though some of the black comedians have started copying their US counterparts.

Pretty much all of those, especially #1 and #2 raise the question
Do we overestimate ourselves?

Or underestimate others?

I'd say both at different times.

No you missed the joke. Number 6 says that we can avoid self controllable risks, like becoming a hipster . . . . or a metrosexual. I thought it would be funny sounding to combine the two. Like an oxymoron.

I did totally miss that. :?

Seems I'm not particularly sharp today, but oh well.

Nice find TC! I'm secretly guilty of this one: Many smokers, for example, acknowledge that "most people" who smoke will get addicted and/or die from it, but also believe themselves, for some reason, to be an exception. If you showed them a PSA about how smoking is addictive and kills people, they'd just nod their heads and completely agree, as long as "people" doesn't include them.

We all suffer a little bit from a case of unwarranted self importance, some just take it to a bigger level. You can look around OT and see for yourself.

I just finished reading that before I came to OT. I thought they were all spot-on, but I couldn't relate to them really.

i'm guilty of all of those to some degree.

I do believe - like someone above me said - everyone (including myself) is guilty of unwarranted self-importance. it artificially boosts our confidence and our lot in life. I think it's ok in small inoffensive doses, but i know a few handful of people who take it way way too far.

The only double standard I'm guilty of is the one pertaining to females and sex. I don't care how many girls my guy friends get with, but the more guys my girl buddies get with, the less respect I have for them.

You can take him for his word. Remember, the article said that people usually pass judgment without bias... or something like that.

Five of them I can admit too, the first one however is questionable.
