Snow White was the first Disney princess to be featured on the big screen in 1937. Now, 72 years later Disney is introducing their latest princess - Tiana. She's the new "fairest of them all" and she's making history as Disney's first black princess. Your reaction? Your thought? Why did Disney after 72 years put a Black princess, why not back in the days?

It's a money issue. They believe a Black Princess is now just as marketable as a white one or more so because it draws in two types of audience.

Let's hope the movie's good or people will still cry "racist."

Though I read that she's not actually a princess in the movie.

Might have something to do with the USA being made up of a majority of "white" ethnicities

just a shot in the dark of course.

I feel the same way. Maybe I would care if the movie did not look like complete crap. I look at Disney movies to see a good family movie not care about what race the characters are.

Same here. Why does there "have" to be a black Disney movie? I can't stand these movies where they go out of there way to be racially sensitive. Why not just make a realistic world where there are people of different races? This movie seems like nothing more than an attempt to get back into the the news which they haven't been in since the early 90s.

This might be a big deal if Disney was setting some kind of bar here. If this was some kind of milestone for racial tolerance, then it might be a big deal.

But Disney's arriving to the party sort of late. It's not like it's still a novel idea to portray blacks in a positive light.

Granted, I'm not saying that it's not GOOD for the Disney company to be a little bit more racially sensitive (at least with their animated division...I know that they own lots of different properties, some of which may or may not have been more progressive). I'm just saying that...yeah. In this day and age, it's not a big deal.

Hey, it might be a really great movie, and may be one of the genuine Disney cla$$ics. It's also nice to see another animated movie in the traditional "cartoon style", since I think that we don't see enough of that these days (what with CGI animation taking the forefront).

But as far as a milestone in racial understanding? Disney is WAY too late for that. At this point in time, it is JUST "an animated Disney movie with a black princess." That's it. Nothing more.

That's not really true.. majority of dvds in asia that come from America are pirated copies. It's biggest profit will occur in America and possibly Europe.

I agree. As a black man I never said "OMG I am not watching this Disney movie cause of the lack of black people" I have said "OMG I am not watching this Disney movie cause it looks like crap" though....And the same thing was said with this new movie. It looks terrible....Just like the new Karate kid...

Aladdin was Arab. But maybe people don't count that since some people consider that movie offensive. Everybody in the movie is Arab, but only the bad guys have Arab accents, the good guys have westernized voices.

The movie looks awful. Yes, yes, classic Disney animation, blah blah blah, but if you saw clips of it, then you'd know it's going to be complete crap.

Well, early view reviews are giving it a pretty good score so far: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/1196003-princess_and_the_frog/

And before that, we had a "Native American" princess, a middle eastern princess, and a princess who was a half-human/half-fish abomination of nature.

When "The Little Mermaid" was released, I don't really recall many people criticizing Disney for catering to the Fish People demographic.

It's not a big deal. Right now, the choice to make the princess black doesn't mean any more or less than choosing to cast Will Smith in a summer blockbuster action movie.

I know some of you have trouble grasping this concept, but Disney is a business that wants to make a lot of money like any other business. Having a black princess in a time when racism was far more prevalent would have been a waste of resources as such a move would have bombed at the box office. On a side note, I believe the singer Brandy played a princess in some made-for-tv Disney movie about a decade ago (not animated, but still).

If I recall, the old black dude from "Song of the South" wasn't even allowed to attend the premiere of THAT SAME MOVIE.

So yeah. You're absolutely right. In a time in which a black actor can be denied from SEEING THE MOVIE THAT HE STARRED IN because he's black, it's a bad business decision to make movies starring blacks. You are ABSOLUTELY right on that point.

However, as I also said, black actors have been making a LOT of money for studios for quite a while. There's nothing WRONG with casting a black hero/heroine/whatever. It's just that people have been doing that for SOOOOO long that it really ISN'T a big deal now that Disney does it.

I don't feel it's a big deal. They didn't do it back in the 30's, 40's, 50's, 60's etc for obvious reasons. Why they didn't do it in the 90's, I'd just guess because white (excluding jasmine) princesses fit better. To be fair, Disney really hasn't had a princess in awhile. What was the last one? Belle?

Oh and I feel song of the south should be brought into America. I've seen it and cannot grasp what is offensive about it.

Come to think of it, Disney hasn't had a "white" disney movie in decades if you don't count Little Mermaid as that more of a sea life movie. Before that I think it would either be Alice in Wonderland or the Sword in the Stone.

Mulan wasn't a princess; she was just an ambiguously bisexual genius who fooled the entire Chinese army. Pocahontas was the daughter of the chief, so she was *kinda* a princess.
