Full Article

An 8-year-old boy was sent home from school and ordered to undergo a psychological evaluation after he was asked to make a Christmas drawing and came up with what appeared to be a stick figure of Jesus on a cross, the child's father said Tuesday.

Chester Johnson told WBZ-TV that his son made the drawing on Dec. 2 after his second-grade teacher asked children to sketch something that reminded them of the holiday.

Johnson said the teacher became upset when his son said he drew himself on the cross. Johnson, who is black, told WBZ he suspects racism is involved. He said he thinks the school overreacted and wants an apology.

Thoughts?

Overreacting to send the kid home because of that, but clearly something is wrong - he should have been drawing Jesus in a crib, not on a cross. He's got his holidays screwed up.

An 8 Year old drawing a picture of himself being nailed to a cross would be disturbing if it wasn't for the whole religious part.

That was overreacted response. It's just a picture, maybe he saw a crucifix in his house and drew it

That teacher is naive and stupid, or is a great case of a legalistic Christian.

It's symbolic to draw yourself on the cross. It symbolizes that you're crucifying all of the sin in your life, and I'm assuming that's what the kid meant to draw.

Psychological evaluation? What a joke.

Talk about a severe overreaction... the school most certainly should apologize... ...although I do wonder why the kid associates Jesus' crucifixion with Christmas, since Christmas is allegedly when Jesus was born...

Typically when kids draw themselves or loved ones in situations of intense pain or suffering it means they might have issues. I never had to draw myself or anyone else on a cross when I was eight because I didn't know or care about things like symbolism.

I'd actually be quite proud that my son would draw something like that. Instead of thinking of himself in wanting presents, he drew what matters more than anything. Not presents. Not Santa Claus. Not even a "cute scene" of a baby in a manger. He thought of Christ crucified, the very purpose for which Jesus descended from the heavens!

Theokhoth

But this kid obviously knows what the symbol of the cross is. Anyone who lives in America and is at least 5 to 6 years old who sees a cross thinks of Jesus, or something in connection to Jesus.

I had the same reaction.

Outside of that fact, this symbol of Jesus on the cross is very common. I remember seeing one hanging in at least half a dozen peoples' houses. Granted, he had the wrong holiday, but this clearly seems like an overreaction.

do you know what a fakeboy is? Basically a fanboy is someone that makes exagerations to show that something is a certain way. A fakeboy is someone that uses the guise of a fanboy to make absurd statements. I was saying that your point was unbelievable and I suspect you're a fakeboy.
