8 Year Old Boy Sent Home for Drawing a Crucifix in Class

An 8-year-old boy was sent home from school and ordered to undergo a psychological evaluation after he was asked to make a Christmas drawing and came up with what appeared to be a stick figure of Jesus on a cross, the child's father said Tuesday.

Chester Johnson told WBZ-TV that his son made the drawing on Dec. 2 after his second-grade teacher asked children to sketch something that reminded them of the holiday.

Johnson said the teacher became upset when his son said he drew himself on the cross. Johnson, who is black, told WBZ he suspects racism is involved. He said he thinks the school overreacted and wants an apology.

The psychological evaluation is a bit much...

An 8 Year old drawing a picture of himself being nailed to a cross would be disturbing if it wasn't for the whole religious part.

Silly kid, the assignment was to make a Christmas drawing, not an Easter drawing.

That was overreacted response. It's just a picture, maybe he saw a crucifix in his house and drew it

Overreacting to send the kid home because of that, but clearly something is wrong - he should have been drawing Jesus in a crib, not on a cross. He's got his holidays screwed up.DJ_Lae

Also i doubt the whole situation is so black and white, it never is.

I think it was an over reaction...his father offered an explanation as to why he drew it...why can't the leave the kid alone...i write about crucifix's and stuff and i'm not psychologically disturbed...also..playing the racism card...how is it racist if you send the kid home for drawing a crucifix..makes no sense..

Typically when kids draw themselves or loved ones in situations of intense pain or suffering it means they might have issues. I never had to draw myself or anyone else on a cross when I was eight because I didn't know or care about things like symbolism.

Can't people sue for slander if they are accused of racism without proof?

Outside of that fact, this symbol of Jesus on the cross is very common. I remember seeing one hanging in at least half a dozen peoples' houses. Granted, he had the wrong holiday, but this clearly seems like an overreaction.
