so this is very interesting,i think this explains a lot of whats happening in those regions,so clearly the Taliban and insurgents there are fighting because they don't know why the hell they have been invaded in the first place,i am sure some of the Taliban know, but i think its a key detail they leave out when recruiting young men. what are your thoughts on this? http://www.democracynow.org/2010/11/22/headlines/poll_92_of_young_afghan_men_dont_know_about_9_11_attacks

My thoughts are that %92 percent of those people don't have a television or radio. Really, we are so used to being able to retrieve any information we want, but in some of these nations, there is no way to get the info other than word of mouth. When the people who surround you have an agenda, it can really skew the populations beliefs.

No, they usually join just to put food on the table. The Taliban is very, very, very unpopular in Afghanistan.

This. Many join because it's the only way they can get money and food.

Exactly. Some are also forced to partake in anti-Coaltion activities like IED planting. If they do not agree, their families are in danger.

Considering the fact most of them don't even know how to use a toothbrush it's not big news. They'd be lucky if they even managed to afford a radio or television. But then, it's one of the most impoverished regions in the world.

No, that's not true at all. The Afghan people have already lived through Taliban rule, and they didn't really appreciate the battery acid that was thrown in the face of young girls trying to go get an education or the requirement for all women to wear burqas, or the general technological backwardness that they promote. The Taliban is not a populist movement that represents the will of the Afghan, it is a brutal, despotic political organization that has continually terrorized the Afghan people.

And what are there... a few thousand televisions in Afghanistan, all in the major cities? Its not surprising they haven't heard of them, given they don't have access to world media, and aren't much for caring about anyone outside their tight-knit community (rural Pashtuns don't go out of their way to learn about people outside their communities at all).

This backwardness and opression of women in afghanistan is a CULTURAL problem. Taliban represent MAJORITY of afghanis and those majority were ABSOLUTELY FINE with what Taliban were doing.

No they don't and they certainly weren't fine with what the Taliban was doing. Most U.S. commanders estimate that about 70% of the Taliban joined because of financial reasons or coercion, and polls show that the Taliban is very unpopular with the Afghan people.

This exactly, they're just a bunch of radicals that took over after the failed soviet invasion that destabilized the country even more than it previously was.

That's not true at all and you haven't presented anything to support your claims. Look up Afgan history before the soviet invasion and the invasion and its aftermath. The taliban doesn't represent the majority.

I'm sure it is common for many of these people in rural Afghanistan to not know of the attacks. With all the problems in their own village I doubt they have time to keep up with the conflicts of the world.
