Please don't get any ideas, the more immorally inclined neckbeards on here.

Only three out of every 100 rapists will ever spend even a single day in prison, according to a new analysis by RAINN of Justice Department data. The other 97 will walk free, facing no consequences for the violent felony they have committed. Because rapists tend to be serial criminals, this leaves communities across the nation at risk of predators.

While the percentage of rapes reported to police has risen in recent years, a majority 54% still are not reported, according to the Justice Department. But increasing reporting alone won't solve the problem: only about one out of four reported rapes leads to an arrest, and only about one out of four arrests leads to a felony conviction and incarceration.

RAINN's new analysis is based on the most recent available Justice Department data, using an average of the five most recent years when available. Based on older data, RAINN had previously estimated that about 6% of rapists ultimately go to prison for their crime.

"This staggering statistic sends a clear message to offenders that they can commit this horrible crime and get away with it. The single most important thing we can do to prevent rape is to put more rapists in prison," notes Scott Berkowitz, RAINN's president and founder. "That's why we have made it a priority to pass the SAFER Act and eliminate the backlog of untested DNA evidence from open rape cases."

In before someone points out men get raped, too, as if it is relevant. 99% of rapes are performed by men, and 87% of the victims are women. It'd be like pointing out that white people sometimes face discrimination... Not very ****ing likely. It's weird how some people will try to trivialize the issue by acting like it's universal, as if it somehow illegitimizes the point.

How do they know 54% of rapes aren't reported to the police if they aren't reported?

Where's mingmao to tell us that men are getting too much blame and it's the victim's fault. Those are saddening, but not surprising numbers. I posted an article some time ago about thousands of rape kits that go untested. It all adds up to thousands upon thousands of women who are traumatized, and will never get justice.

Most crime in general never makes it in news or even gets reported.

It is actually rather important that men do get raped, by either men or women, and it is a highly under reported crime much like domestic abuse against men.  And what is the point of your post? that rape is bad and under reported--yes we know.

I don't, but I think they can afford to feel just a little bit ****ty while they're living large and keeping everyone else down. ;) I'm a white male, by the way. And yes, also a feminist. Why wouldn't everyone be a feminist? If you're a half-way decent human being, you should want to fight for women's rights.

How is the average white male keeping everyone down? I'm not keeping people down because I was born white and male. People don't have a choice to be born male or female or into any race. I also think gender equality is important, but some of modern day feminists in the Western world don't seem to have as much of an interest in equality as they do in dominance.

White men aren't collectively keeping people down. A culture biased towards white men, however, is. Only the people who perpetuate this social dominance are responsible for keeping everyone else down.

I feel the graph is a bit presumptuous. They seem like they are assuming every report of a rape is an actual rape and that the cases that are let go are "walking free" rather than simply those individuals not being guilty of a crime. Or the cases where there is not enough evidence to prosecute a crime.

Rape of course is a major issue, and am sure lots of rapists have walked, but this graph strikes me as rather sensational.

Most systems have the idea that you are innocent until proven guilty. It's a nice thing, but it does put the burden on the victim to prove their case. Rape can be very difficult to prove. Violent rape is one thing, but i think that does not account for the largest number of reported cases. I suspect that the majority of rape cases are where the two people know each other. It can often be construed as "he said, she said." As for your statistics, remember that any case of sex involving a minor and adult is considered rape regardless of consent. So if an 18 yo and 16 yo go at it, that's statutory rape.

The state usually does so with evidence and witness testimonies. In many cases the only witness is the victim, so it is a big burden on the victim.

That as well. Even if they prove the rapist had sex with the victim, it still doesn't prove he raped them. The defense would love to make it seem consensual.

There may not be a better way, but toast and I are just alluding to why it's difficult for rape victims. There are reasons many rapists never receive punishment as this OP suggests.

Not that I know of. If they just take the accusers word for it then it would result in more innocent people being arrested.

Give it up already TC. We get it, you hate everything about yourself (being white and male), but you don't need to constantly make threads telling the majority of users on this site how terrible their race/gender is. As for the statistincs, they are no surprise to anyone who knows anything about crime. There is a very low conviction and incarceration rate for almost all crimes, and males are the majority perpetrators of all violent crimes. There isn't a whole lot that can be done about this. Our legal systems are based on liberal principals, so unless it can be clearly proven that someone commited a crime, we are not going to take their liberty away (for fear of locking up an innocent man). This is especially difficult in rape cases, where it is often "he said, she said". Also, males are going to continue to commit most violent crimes because they are inherntly more agressive. It is the same reason why men take on careers most women shy away from (ie, military). It's just a fact of life.

Kind of scary to think about. 54% not reported? Is that just in the USA? My ex was raped and she most definitely reported it. What happened to the guy is my guess though.
