Alright i'm considering buying a glock handgun somewhere down the road basically to have for defensive purposes or emergencies. Their models come in just about every ammo type there is. I know 9mm is cheaper overall and the magazine can have more rounds. And the .40 is a lil more expensive and a little more power but not as much rounds in a single magazine. Anyone have opinions on this? Or know another glock supported ammo type thats better than these two like the .10mm?

.40 H&k pistols can hold 13-17 rounds, depending on the model. Unless you pissed off a gang, I don't think you'll need anymore than that...

im no gun expert by any means, but if 9mm is cheaper, and can hold more, and you only want it for self defense, i think 9mm would be fine.

What kind of city do you live in where you need to carry around a gun for "defensive purposes or emergencies"? Thank god I live in Canada.

Well it seems what i've read on other forums is that a good shot is the most important. It doesn't matter how big a hole it leaves, if it isn't in a spot that can incapacitate someone then there isn't much point in a bigger round.

P.S. I'm not thinking of carrying it around with me, I'm thinking of keeping it in my home. I just would like to have one in case i ever need it. Id rather have it when I need it than vice versa.

I would also take into consideration how the bullet (in terms of size) react when hitting bone or other dense material. You might want to see if the 9mm can deflect off of the collarbone, lets say, and instead of just breaking the bone, it deflects and goes into the criminals heart.

The .40 is more than just a little more powerful. One shot in the chest and that person is gone for good, but the same can't be said about 9mm its not as powerfull. Ive seen many people get shot with a 9mm and walk just fine.

I would always recommend going with something larger than a 9mm. 9's arent going to have enough power to stop someone should they make a move to attack you, hitting them with a .40 or a .45 will spin their ass around while putting a pretty large hole on their backside. I have a Taurus PT 24/7 pro (.40 cal) and it feels great, handles very well, and is very safe when used properly. I would suggest you research more into a .40 cal before you consider a 9.

I guess the type of ammo would also matter. 9mm hollow points would be quite deadly.

If it's really a big concern and for "defense" then I would go for a higher caliber. More stopping power, and range shouldn't be as important.

If its for defence and emergencies it shouldn't realy matter. It fires a bullet extremely quickly towards where you are pointing it. Thats all that should really matter.

Nothing I see it on cops and TrueTV all the time. They will shoot someone with a 9mm and he'll just keep running. Not to mention there were a few episodes where they would find someone shoot like 3-4 times and he'd be fine.

I dont know much about guns, but after watching military channel, the 9mm looks pretty weak. I would go with the .40 cal.

Because they were most likely under the influence of a drug such as PCP?

edit: also for the TC, my local SWAT team uses the 40. H&K I mentioned. So, maybe that would weigh in :P

Really? because we were talking about military weaponry and explosives for house defense?

Not like an M79 can be concealed like a pistol. "Hey what's that on your back?"

"oh dont' worry, it's a grenade launcher. I keep it for defense in case I ever get jumped"

You really cant go wrong with a .40 cal. It has the power to do what you need done and it isnt hard to handle at all.

Yeah maybe all the people that the cops shot at were but there were many people who got shot up by victims that lived. Then when they found the victim they also found the gun along with him.

Try find a 9mm Browning pistol, super reliable, only 4(?) parts to the whole pistol when you strip and assemble, theoretivally accurate up to 50m (Which is a lot in handgun terms).

For all the people going on about how people take loads of 9mm and keep walking around - please... If you had seen someone hit, you'd know how much agony someone is in after just one hit. A .40 cal is way too much weapon for protective purposes.

You point a gun at me, I'm gonna pee my pants and do whatever you tell me to do. So the size thing really is quite irrelevant - I don't live in the States, is .40cal readily available?

And I thought such a place only existed in my dreams...

Seriously here in NZ it's hard enough to get your A-cat license for hunting rifles and stuff! Mind you if I took an assault rifle deer-hunting it'd sorta defeat the purpose...

Yep where I live in the states you can to go gunshows every weekend and buy a .40 and not even have to get a license the only thing they will do is a background check. Also a few sports and outdoors places sell pistols.

I didn't say assault rifles :(

Despite being able to have all those weapons, specific rules for hutning still apply. Such as only 3 rounds in a magazine.

I don't think you need a .40 caliber, at the same time if you're in a situation where you NEED all the extra rounds a 9mm can get you're probably more a danger to everyone else and yourself than anyone attacking you.

I know they're not as cool but I think simple revolvers are the ideal solution for most people. Easy to use, easy to maintain.

go for 9mm. Its cheaper, and to be honest if some burgler sees a gun he isnt going to be like "is that a 9mm or .40? Cuz if its a 9mm I think I will take my chances and rush you"

If, and this is a big "if", I were to have a gun for home defense I think it would be a big ass revolver (dirty harry gun!) or a shotgun. That way I wouldnt really have to shoot anyone I could just show them the gun and theyd run. My dad worked as an inspector for the government and the cops were saying they love shotguns and recommend them for home defense.

ya I problably wouldnt even keep it loaded lol. i would just club people with it and throw those heavy-ass bullets at them.

"Get out of my house!" *throws bullet*
"Ow, shouldnt you be shooting me?"
"No, that'd be too quick, I want you to suffer!!!" *clubs burglar with gun*
"ow, ok ok I am sorry...please, shoot me! SHOOOOOT ME!"

The 9mm can hold like 12 bullets and 1 in the chamber. So its pretty good overall. I have one and yes i live in Canada(Toronto).

At less than 50 feet( yeah feet, not even yards), the person isn't going to be dodging any bullets.
