This happened to me today.
A 16 year old girl had jumped out a second story window of her apartment and ran to me for help. Apparently, her mom was beating her up (jumping on top of her, pulling her hair, and scratching her face). She saw me outside with my dog and ran up to me, begging to let her inside (which I did). She was visibly shaken and in tears. Her mother told her she was going to have her taken away and that she was at fault. I offered to call the police, but she didn't want me to (I'm kicking myself for not calling anyway), so I let her use my phone to call a friend who's mother came and picked her up.
Should I have called the police? This isn't the first time her mother has become physicaly aggressive towards her and I don't think it's safe for her to go back home. On the other hand, maybe I'm being too compassionate. In any case, I did my best to cheer her up.
What would you have done?
