(CBS News) Rep. Mike Kelly, R-Pa., an ardent opponent of the contraception mandate that went into effect Wednesday, is comparing the beginning of the mandate to the attacks on Pearl Harbor and the September 11 terrorist attacks.

"I know in your mind you can think of the times that America was attacked," Rep. Mike Kelly, R-Pa., said during a news conference. "One is December 7th, that's Pearl Harbor Day; the other is September 11th and that's the day of a terrorist attack. I want you to remember August the first 2012 the attack on our religious freedom. That is the date that will live in infamy along with those other dates."

"Today is the day that religious freedom died," Kelly said.

My mind is blown.

I wish that a veteran from Pearl Harbor would find this guy and whack him around the head with a cane. Also, how many men who come up with these things have slept with women hwho have used contraception? When will people understand that there are many different belief structures in the US and a large number of them have no interest in restricting contraception. Do we really want an exceedingly overpopulated country?

I believe that we should start lobotomizing our representatives post election.

Plus chemical castration to prevent them from reproducing.

Do some of these people even think before they say stuff?

I understand being against this mandate, but comparing it to Pearl Harbor and 9/11? Really?

people cry about this but then ignore that public funding is used for roads on which people drive to get abortions.

you would think these people with such superior morals would stop paying taxes since they directly fund baby killing.

their motto should be "in for a penny in for a... ok, we are only in for a penny."

No, but it is covered by insurance, and not required for men. It's a luxury. Sme women need contraceptives for medical reasons, not for sexual reasons. I can't think of a non-sexual reason for needing a boner.

Is it required by law though? Isn't that what we're arguing here?

If insurance companies want to cover things like contraception or ED pills that's fine, that's their choice. But to require to do that but law is a whole different story.

To me, it's a question of personal philosophy. How many of these men who are very anti-contraception are taking the bue pill and getting insurance to pay for it? Or don't have to worry about insurance because they are rich enough to pay out of pocket.

It doesn't matter how they can pay for it as long as taxpayers aren't forced to and insurance companies aren't forced to. Key word is "force".

Loss of life will always trump government redistibution of wealth in terms of tragedy. That said, redistribution of wealth sucks too, but not as much.

Edit: Actually, I forgot that some forms of birth control are abortive, so yeah, in terms of lives lost there could be significantly more dead from insurance sponsored abortions than from Pearl Harbor and 9/11. That is a problem that more needs to be addressed with abortion laws than with government insurance policy.

The unfortunate FACT is without birth control and abortion, crime rates would be staggering. They called it relative morality when I was in school.
