The Lord of the Rings. A Game of Thrones is a fun read/watch, but it lacks the depth and quality LotR has.

A Song of Ice and Fire has plenty of depth. Not only in terms of characterization but also the history of the world.Agent-Zero
Oh, does it? Does it have a fully functional language, created by the author?
Tolkien created this. The lore for all races and places, even if not presented in the Lord of the Rings books, exist in others notes and books -- reason why everything is so concise. Tolkien used poetry at the level of art in LotR. Tolkien was a professor and highly regarded in the study of languages. George R. R. Martin is a screenwriter/author.
I have nothing against him, but the quality disparity between LotR and GRRM's books ismassive. As I said, you may enjoy the book as a fun read, but comparing its quality to that of Tolkien's work is pointless.
[QUOTE="mrmusicman247"]Which ever one killed Dumbledore. Apollo-XIThat was Twilight.I thought that was the Hunger Games.
If we're comparing the books, A Song of Ice and Fire. I don't really care what anybody says, in terms of dark fantasy, readability, and that dash of realism that makes all fantasy great, GRRM has Tolkien beat. Perhaps it's just the age, but LoTR doesn't read well.
If we're talking about the movies, LOTR will always reign supreme. No TV show or movie has come close to realizing the epicness that LOTR does.
Really tough call, but I remember seeing LOTR as a kid and **** loving. Game of Thrones is an amazing series and I love the characters in it. But none of them have **** on the men of the west and especially Aragorn.
They're both superlative works. Lord of the Rings is a lovingly told tale that has become timeless literature; Game of Thrones is an engrossing epic that will become a new standard. I regard them both highly, though I prefer Lord of the Rings, mainly because it was such a large part of my 'fantasy lexicon' during my formative years. It's been the go-to book for fantasy archetypes for decades.

We're talking quality of literary work, not linguistic depth. How does Tolkein's obsession w/ developing ridiculously detailed lore affect the quality of the story in LOTR in comparison to ASOIAF? (Except for the greater ability to nerd out)
LOTR is better
GOT is awesome, and I will be watching season 2 when it has finished so I can watch at my leisure. BUt thats the thing, GOT is much better suited to TV series, it has a lot of political intricacies and it is more soap opera/ drama with fantasy elements than a fantasy Story.
GOT would NOT work as a movie. It would feel disjointed and convoluted.
But the reason LOTR is better is because of its harrowing characters, scale, setting, rich culture and history. LOTR is THE crucible for the majority of all Fantasy.
I honestly read this thread and decided to throw my ass in bed to watch Return of the KingGuess i just figured out what i'm doing over the 4 day Easter holidays. LotR marathon!!!

And my penis So I can fap to this nerd-gasmic event.Would've voted The Hunger Games if I didn't just finish Game of Thrones, but MAN was Game of Thrones good. And I know the next four books are better!
I've only seen one episode of A Game of Thrones, and I've seen all three LOTR films. I can't render a judgement on A Game of Thrones because I've seen so little of it, but based on what I've seen, it seems good. As for LOTR, it sucks.

I LOVE GoT but LotR has a far better universe

If you're talking about the books, I can't speak for GoT, but I can say that LOTR's prose is very tedious to read (the exposition is over done).

Harry Potter?! They're childrens books dude, they're not even in the same realm as Tolkiens work.
