I have two questions for the liberals on this board (by liberal, I mean those that strongly support the democratic party).

1. What would happen with national defense if Obama became President? Would this country be as safe from terrorist groups as we've been since September 11th? Or would things be even better? If so, how? This does not have to include the Iraq war.

2. What is your vision for the country in five years?

I just want to know.

1. Considering we were safer before we had the current Repbulican president I don't see that that matters.

2. Won't come to pass no matter who wins.

And not all Democrats are liberal.

1)I dont see why people think that we are any safer since 9/11 just because we havent been attacked, I dont know why people assume we are. I dontn think Obama would weaken our defense and I think with him, we are just as likely to be attacked as we are today. Also if he did go into Pakistan, then the terrorist who actually do plan attacks and attacked us on 9/11 would actually be killed and serious hurt from within, seeing how fighting in Iraq is not doing anything to dispurt and attack terrorist strong holds.

2) Out of Iraq, possibly moved into Pakistan is the president of Pakistan doesnt begin to take care of his terrorist problem, we will have to, they are the true threat. Hopefully the economy will be doing better, less money wasted on Iraq. Maybe Obama if he won would do more for stem cell research and medical research being held back by conservatives.

Thank you for an answer that was more than a few words.

I'm definitely voting for John McCain, though if Obama does become President, I will be rooting for him to make the right decisions and at least be moderate like Bill Clinton was. I don't want him to be a supreme liberal and make the democratic party look terrible just for the sake of the GOP looking great. I think nationally, and I'm not selfish.

My biggest concern with Obama is national defense and the war. I'm not afraid because of "teh fear mongers." I make well thought out observations. If combat troops are pulled from Iraq too soon, there could be some serious problems. How is that just spin from conservatives? You don't think that things could get worse?

I think the slow removal from troops out of Iraq can be done, and I think teh Iraqis can fend for themselves. I do not know why Bush continues to Bush this war when it has become overdrawn and very unnecassry. I believe if it came down to it Obama would do the right thing. He has arleady stated he would use force in Iran and Pakistan if needed, a little hint that he isnt weak and does have what it takes to defend the US. I just cannot seeing anything good coming from another 4 years of a republican president, luckily McCain is a liberal conservative, but I still will vote for Obama, I think he is a president that can actually back up his idea of change.

All the Iraq war is now, is the Bush administration trying to not look like total dumb*****. They screwed up badly on this issue, actually on most issues over the past eight years, and now they're trying to justify their search for 'teh WMDS!!' by resorting to excuses like "We're fighting for democracy!" Do people really believe the U.S. government cares about the Iraqi citizens? Their are people living in tyranny all over the world!

As a moderate I can say this.. What exactly has Bush done? For the security of the United States? Other then bring fourth unconstiutional things like the patriot act..

Lets look at this.. Our borders are wide open, our ports hardly ever monitored same with our planes (when it comes to cargo), The Taliban a organization that supports AQ is back, Iraq War is destroying our military as well as giving us tremendous debt, he has commited diplomatic sucicide numerous times in things like Iran, Iran's nuclear weapons detail is at full steam ahead, Bin Ladin is not dead, terrorism is worse now then it was before the war..

A person doing nothing could be better then him...

--As moderate I don't know with gas prices estimating to reach possibly $7, our middle class is getting ravaged, our lower class is swelling in numbers....... I honestly think no canidate will do well in this situation.

so you're judging our entire party based on George W. Bush? That's what we call partisan politics. Not all conservatives are thick headed like that. And i think McCain is a lot more respectable, charismatic, and reliable than Bush wishes he could be (With all due Respect to bush, but i dont like his "I'll do what i want, let the republican party burn" attitude he's taken as of late).

Oh, and our presence in Iraq isnt a bush decision, The withdrawel of troops is currently under the direct supervision of General Petraeus. He's making sure there is a smooth withdrawl, and over the summer there is suppose to be some significant withdrawels (The Surge should be completely gone soon).

1. Being liberal does not mean you have to like the democratic party

2. Terrorism is more of a psychological danger/societal phenomenon.

Bush antagonizes people. Obama does not. Having Obama in office alone, deters terrorism from occuring.

1. I think Obama can get the job done without restricting our freedom then again, anyone could probably do it. Also, America isn't in any real danger. I find it silly that people still believe another 9/11 is going to happen soon.

2. In five years I hope to see America in the shape it was 10 years ago.

And I pretty much agree with everything else SaintLeonidas has said took the words right out of my mouth, or mind, or fingers 8)

1. The country would likely be more safe. Less troop presence in the Middle East and less "terrorism" propaganda translates into less animosity and less anti-Western sentiments. It's incredibly naive that McCain is condemning Obama for proposing diplomacy as opposed to ignoring the countries that are hostile towards the United States. I fail to see how the latter is conducive to maintaining peaceful conditions.
2. I see us in a much more stabilized economy. There will be less pandering to the rich, and consequently the government will have much more breathing room in terms of fiscal responsibility. The deficit will begin to increase much less. I don't think that universal healthcare will be fully fleshed out, but I think it will be in a condition where it is greatly more affordable and accessible than it was before. We will actually have some scientific funding coming out of the government, and our oil dependency will begin to be reduced with alternative energy support. Global warming will be acknowledged by the government, and there will be a significant initiative to decrease carbon emissions. Education will be less costly, as it will be adequately funded. We will still have a small troop presence in Iraq, but one that serves more as a police force than any sort of full occupation. There will undoubtedly be struggles with such a system, but it will be a step in the right direction.

In all honesty, I'm sure the terrorists could've easily bombed the twin towers no matter who was president. Nobody was expecting it, plain and simple.

As for the OP...

1. Defense spending would be close to what it is now, minus the Iraq War funding. We're never going to be 100% safe, we're lucky it took as long as it did for an attack to happen, sadly it was a massive one. Our standing in the world may improve, which would also help defense.

2. The above, a sensible solution on health care, and an effort to enact a real feasible energy policy to get us off oil.

I have two questions for the liberals on this board (by liberal, I mean those that strongly support the democratic party).

I agree with this poster whole heartedly. The best recruiter for terrorism for the past 7 years has been George W Bush. I'd predict a slightly lower defense budget under Obama, but that doesn't mean we'd actually be less safe. Do bombers and tanks actually help in a war against terrorism? No. Our main weapon will be public relations and intelligence. Both of these were sorely lacking under Bush.

As for the economy, the president doesn't actually affect it too much. The current recession is more to blame on the incredible short-sightness and greed of the major banks rather than Bush. However, as spending shifts from foreign (blowing a lot of money in Iraq) to domestic and the continued high price of oil makes it a smaller and smaller part of the economy, the USA will slowly become stronger than ever before (due to not having to rely on Saudi Arabia any more).

Under an Obama presidency, I hope to see the USA lead the charge on fighting global warming. I hope to see USA leading the wave of new Green technologies.

1. Being liberal does not mean you have to like the democratic party

2. Terrorism is more of a psychological danger/societal phenomenon.

Bush antagonizes people. Obama does not. Having Obama in office alone, deters terrorism from occuring.

Boltybolt

That is ridiculous. "Teh terrorists have feelings too!"

Maybe the terrorists will suddenly like us (the infidels) if we don't call them for what they really are: evil.

What he said is partly true, whats Bushs so called goal for the middle east? To spread democracy, and he is wailling to use force to due so. One major thing terrorist organizations are againest is the spread of democracy andn by saying that he wants to convert the enntire middle east just gives them a reason to attack us.

MayorJohnny

I really do not think that the defense budget will change drastically, perhaps ot will be less cut I do not have a problem with that. We account for almost half of the worlds spending of defense yet I do not believe its neede and I do not believe we would be any less safe with Obama or McCain. A better idea would be to spend our resources in a better way such as take our troops out of nations such as Germany were we have tens of thousands stationed. Also I dont believe that the army we currently have is as well prepared for the warfare we will be doing in the future. They may be the best trained, disciplined and extremly well armed but the Army is a force designed to destroy another countries army not engage in gurilla warefare and acting as police and trying to track down small groups of terrorists in foreign countrysides. Personally I think our defense budget needs to be alocated more towards intelliagence gathering and training units to be prepared for that kind of warfare. Now it seems like our military is used for retaliation rather than preventing attacks while superior intel gathering would serve to actually stop attacks.

Sorry that was so long but the short answer is that I dont think we would be any less safe with Obama because we will probably still be in the same situation we are in now no matter who the president is.

Personally if we have Obama or Clinton I would say the majority of our troops would most likely be out of Iraq depending on some unforseable event. McCain may be in longer but I doubt it would make things any better.

Personally no matter who gets in I doubt much will change in their first 4 years.
