I read a thread today titled "What are you living for"?

I noticed that some people had put raising a child as what they are living for. But it made me wonder.

Parenting a typical part of life for most people (correct me if im wrong). I think raising a child is a noble thing to do, and I dont think its easy. But parenting is such a normal thing lots of people do. Why not aim for something else special, something unique for you, to live your life for? I am by no means saying you should not raise a child. But shouldn't people live for something more special, not just having kids?

My question to you is:

If you are a parent...

If your child dies (or leaves), what will you live for?

If you are not...

If everyone became barren, what will you live for?

If you are doing what you are living for...

What is it?

If everyone is doing it there must be a damn good reason for it.

Being a parent scares the hell out of me. I'm scared my kid will end up as f***** up as me.

I think that for some, it could be raising a child. But not everyone by any means. Some people don't have any business raising a child.

I am not a parent, but a 17 year old guy.

I live for making the best of myself, in whatever aspect of life I choose. I think that is all anyone could live for.

Nothing we will ever or have ever done is really "special." We only tell ourselves that so we can pretend that our lives actually have some semblance of purpose, meaning, and continue to give ourselves some cause for believing that our lives are distinct and unique from the other 6 billion humans out there.

Yeah, that's pretty much it. Your life will always be worthless on a universal scale, so if having a kid makes you happy, why not do it?

What if raising children is the most "special" thing one can achieve? What do you define as more "special" than that?

Although, raising a child may seemingly appear "normal" to you, it may not for others. A child is a part of you but your drive, ambitions and dreams remain a constant in your life. I know plenty of couples who long to have children and can not, hence having a child is not normal for them, rather a life-altering experience that could easily be perceived as a miracle of sorts....to them.

Evolution - The people who didn't raise children were weeded out because they didn't have decendants to carry on their ideas/genes.

I live because I'm alive. It's not like it creates some scheduling conflict or something. I've got nothing else to do (as far as I know).

that's silly. if it were so, we'd all be running around naked humping every last thing that moved.

I personally don't see the huge appeal of having children. I wish the best to those who truly desire them and wish to raise them well, but I simply can't see myself ever having a child. They're basically little drunks for the first couple of years.

I don't really know what I'm living for. I guess I just want to make myself and others happy.

Well, it's not really silly if you TRULY believe that. Most who say they do don't, if you go around beating people with sticks and having sex with every woman you see and acting like a caveman, then yes, you're being a very natural human being. But having things like morals and all that stuff pretty much defeats the whole, "Only biological!" reasoning.

I live to experience life in everyway possible. There is no one thing I can select that makes me want to live, just life itself. When I have experienced all that it has to offer, then I will have no reason to want to live, but since that will never happen I'm not worried. One hundred lifetimes would not be enough.

I have a son and a daughter so if my children died I would be devastated. However, death is a part of life so I would have to go on living. I would probably devote my life to my profession, or perhaps finally write the novel I always promised myself that I would finally write. Anything to keep my mind off of the fact that my kids are no longer with me.
