I always hear people say "don't put pcitures of yourself getting drunk or anything like that because employers will see it and it may end up disqualifying you for the job." What if you aren't on any social networking websites? Will they ever not hire someone because they think you are too secretive, or they think you're some socially awkward creep? Basically will a company ever not hire you for something they didn't see that wasn't crucial to the hiring process?

I don't think this would ever happen, no. Not hiring someone because they don't have a Facebook page would be a little silly.

you're speaking as if the whole social networking thing is the normative thing....it isn't ,since people have begun doing things(anything! parties, hiking w/e) for the sake of the opprotunity to photograph themselves and post it online the entire western civilization has gone to hell... :|

It won't hurt your chances of being hired. But it doesn't hurt being on a site like LinkedIn.com. Employers can search there to see if you are listed, if you have any references, and what your job history is like.

Facebook is not a business networking site. LinkedIn is.

Are you worried this will happen?

Employer: I like everything on your resume, but there's a problem, you're not on facebook. Why aren't you on Facebook?

Applicant: I thought it was a waste of time.

Employer: No one thinks that! You must go to orgies every weekend, and you're hiding it!

Applicant: No, I don't do that.

Employer: Liar! This interview is over, pervert.
