Is it true that under your NHS health care system you guys get literally free healthcare?

Higher taxes, no 'fee' for going to the doctor. But the NHS is terrible; it's in such a ridiculous state

I am Australian and we also have free Health Care, but it has certain limits like you can only get surgery for free if you need it. You can walk in and ask for a new heart for no reason or ask for elective surgery to be covered by Medicare( the health system) I imagine its the same in Britain

Taxes are fairly high, I think they are about average for Europe. Probably higher than the US, but thats how these things work. You can't provide State health care etc. without taxes. The point is, it is based on the idea that everyone should be entitled to a decent standard of health care, not just the wealthy. You don't have to fill in a tax return unless you are self employed, or you received some kind of income that is not through your employment etc. We have a system here called Pay As You Earn, which means your employer is legally obliged to calaculate your tax for you and it is taken from your wage. You never actually receive the taxable income.
