I'm fully capable of driving a stick shift but was wondering if there was a way to speed up my stopping, changing gears, and then moving process. When coming up to a stop sign, is it safe to switch to 1st gear when you are below 10-5 mph, and then stop and go with the clutch in the whole time? It gets a little bothersome when you have to wait till you completely stop to change into 1st gear.

You don't have to wait for the stop sign to downshift or anything like that. When I had my clutch I did this often. It's actually a little better for your driving if you downshift. If you're coming to a light for instance, and you're in 4th gear and take it down to second, if the light turns green and you accelerate, you're car isn't working as hard to get back the rpm's for 4th gear and you can drive smoothly past the light more quickly.

It's not mandatory but I find it easier when I'm driving stick.

It's safe so to speak but it wears out your clutch faster which is kind of pricey to fix. I would just coast to a stop and wait at N at the light, and then change it to first gear a little before the stop light turns green for you.

Can you ever switch to first gear when moving, even if it's under 10 mph?

When I see a stop sign I put it in neutral and coast up to it... then depress the clutch and put it in 1st right before I come to a complete stop. I don't know if this is the correct way... I was never formally taught how to drive a manual. I just learned on my own.

It is no slower than driving an automatic that way.

You can move the shifter freely as long as you have the clutch pressed in. You just want to make sure you are in the right gear for the speed you are going. For instance, don't press the clutch and down shift to first gear if you are going 30 mph. If you do, you will get a big jolt unless you blip the gas while the clutch is pressed so that you can bring the RPM's up to match.

Yes, although when coming to a stop I don't exactly see the point to it.

I'm not exactly the fastest shifter in the world so I stop for a few more extra seconds while I shift. Anyways, thanks guys for answering my question.

i feel so lazy driving autos. Just a tip if you want to be able to accelerate quick, drop a gear. Your car speeds up quicker at high rpms.
