A couple of weeks back there was a thread debating the merits of men getting a vasectomy for his partner as opposed to women having to be the one being on birth control. Over several pages of posts emerged. Some men reacted understandably with horror at the thought of being cut "down there". Others said they would do it if they really had to. Women claimed that a man not willing to do this obviously doesn't really love his wife/girlfriend. Various people chimed in on their preferred method of preventing unwanted pregnancies. I think there were even a couple of posts decrying the evil of birth control in general. That thread had many of the hallmarks of a good thread, including a very memorable quote. (Sun_Tzu's epic "nobody is taking the venom out of my cobra" comment very early in the thread.) Now, however, the Chinese may be showing us the way forward. We may at last have a realistic alternative for male birth control forthcoming. Testosterone Birth Control

I wouldn't do that messing with hormones has historically proved to have some nasty and wide ranging side effects.

I heard about that, I think it's nice having another option but I'll probably stick with the female pill as it actually benefits some women in other ways than contraception. Also: "For couples who can not, or prefer not to use only female-oriented contraception, options have been limited to vasectomy, condom and withdrawal," Withdrawal...does he mean that as 'pull out'? If he does then he doesn't deserve to be a doctor :|

If it doesn't have any weird side-effects then I can see myself taking those. I don't think the use of a condom will go away with it's effectiveness just 1 point below a full 100 percent. It's that 1 percent that could ruin a man's day (until they wise up and get all happy).

I would think that the long term side effects of excess testosterone would be not be good.

Gu said more testing was needed to determine the long-term effects of the injections on men's hearts and prostate glands, reports The TelegraphThe Article linked above
This isn't fully ready for release to the public yet. I do like the idea though that in the future men will be more involved/informed about the birth control being used. @duxup There are several methods of hormonal birth control for women out there. Everything that effects the body has side effects. It will be interesting to see what the side effects of this are in the future. @JimCarrey Dunno yet. I just stumbled on that this morning.

@Sun_Tzu :) @Jandurin Find me a thread on the OT board that doesn't have a lot of misconceptions in it and I'll show you a dead thread. ;)

Considering the effects of past hormonal treatments and the number of nasty surprises for folks down the line I wouldn't touch this with a 10 foot pole for a good generation. Directly messing with hormones from what I've seen seems to produce a lot more random results with little explanation for the results or much learned from them than most such medical experiments.

Agreed that I wouldn't want to be one of the early adopters. But I like the fact that they're developing more options for male birth control.

Unfortunatly most drugs die during the phase III and phase IV clinical trials. Even if we do see this it won't be for another decade.

It would be an interesting new social dynamic.

Young Guy Cruising the Dating Scene: "Ah baby, I don't need to shrink wrap it. I'm on the pill." Skeptical Woman: "Uh huh. Sorry, but I really don't know you that well. Suit up." One more step towards full gender equality in society? :P

I'll just play the nasty devils advocate all day I guess.

I'd hate to see a lot less protection used for this when it comes to casual activity what with STDs and all.

Some side effects are good. Not to be TMI here but I started taking the pill to help with the terrible cramps I got every month, not as a contraception. I was in agony, couldn't sit, couldn't stand, couldn't do anything. Now I barely get any. Also my periods have gone down from 7 day medium flow to 3/4 day light flow. And I know EXACTLY when I'll come on unlike before when I'd be up to 2 weeks late every month. It's all different for different people. I know girls that go on the pill and nothing changes. I know a few girls that have the implant and haven't had periods for 3 years. I'd love not to have them at all but for some reason I view that as being unhealthy and I could have the implant and nothing happen. [QUOTE="nocoolnamejim"] Agreed that I wouldn't want to be one of the early adopters. But I like the fact that they're developing more options for male birth control.

Agreed. More options = better

agreed.

frankly I dont see the problem with traditional vasectomies. A little snip down there and thats it. Men can still have sex, ejaculate...there is just no sperm. Its also reversable in most cases.

With that said, I'd still argue with my wife for weeks before commiting to one lol.

That's not being devil's advocate. That's being rational. You're pointing out a very real potential social side effect that would lead to more physical ones.

I see where youre coming from but vasectomies are generally undertaken by men who are married and dont want to have any more kids. As a result, STDs are not really an issue.

I dont imagine a lot of horny bachelors going out and willing themselves to be sterile simply so they can go "hey baby, I dont need a condom...i got my thingy snipped!"

Although I can see a small few doing that lol.

I'd love to hear from some women on how that little pick up line would go over... "I got my thingy snipped!" Somehow I can't see that being a major turn on for women.

There seem to be a lot of replies from guys saying that they dont wanna take hormones as they could have nasty side effects but the female pill has hormones in it and you seem ok with women taking the pill and risking side effects.

I took the pill for about a year and i have to admit that i absolutly hated it, it completely messed with my body and mood swings (even though the pill is supposed to reduce mood swings?!). I think it's great that there may finally be something that men can take so the burden of contreception is not focused so much on women.

I wouldn't mess around with my hormones, and I wouldn't expect men to. Unless they can prove that it has no negative side effects, of course.

I am fine with the idea of having a vasectomy as I already got one. My wife nearly died giving birth to our daughter. She was told by the doctor if we have another child she wouldnot make it. He also told her she should get her tubestied butit would be a very risky procedure and she should wait a few years before trying it. It was much easier and safer for me to get fixed then her. It was a no brainer.

Testosterone Birth Control? That sounds like it's going to lower the level of our hormones. Isn't that going to have pretty big side effects? I think I'm going to keep using condoms. Much easier.

Since becoming educated about COCP's, I've found there are many benefits to taking the pill besides an incredibly high contraceptive rate. And my girlfriend uses them for more than just a contraceptive.

I think it should be more widely and freely available to those that want it. It is a literal godsend. As long as you keep taking the pill regularly, there is absolutely nothing to worry about at all when it comes to sex... no condom slipping/breaking, no dudded spermicide, etc. etc. Just one tiny pill everyday and no worries at all.

No way I'm ever getting a vasectomy. I can't imagine doctors digging around down there, tying my tubes and whatnot. What is the big deal with the condoms? They work, and are cheap. I don't think this will work.

ahhhhh there it is...let the fear in!

C'mon guys, Im not saying theyre not out there, but if youre careful and you know who youre with, the chances of getting an STD are slim. Just use common sense, know your partner, etc..

Plus, you know, youre going to use a condom the first time youre with a new girl. Problably even for the first few times. Then the pill will come into play.
