He's right. It's impossible (or near impossible) to explain what left and right are. if you point your thumbs up wards and coil your figers the ones that hand on which the fingers go in a clockwise direction is your left hand

Hold out your hands in front of you, with your thumbs at a 90degree angle to you index finger...The hand that shows a "L" shape (your left)...Is the left hand side....Is that what you meant?
I would begin by explaining the nature of a compass. Then I would mention how the concept of "left", "right", "front" and "back" are much like an individual compass heading that remains fixed for each individual's perspective. So in much the same manner that a compass orients itself to the magnetic poles, a human being will orient him or herself to the environment. Finally, I would define each of those terms based on the compass headings to lend direction to definition.
When I'm facing someone there right looks like their left, and their left looks like their right. Maps also have left and right. West is left, and East is right.
