I dont know how it is in other countries but the school systems in America require people to take Spanish as a language, or certain jobs you have to learn another Language..why should most have to go out of their way to learn a language that is the most common in your own country, shouldnt the people who come here that dont know english crack the books hard to learn our language instead of us having to learn theirs?

So...Learn English or get out? :| I think it's silly to expect people to learn our language simply because they live in a country. Learning another language is important for everyone.

I would argue in most schools the requirement to study another language has benefits beyond just using that language.

Speaking of language, I think the word you are looking for is "required".

I wasn't aware American kids had to learn Spanish now. It wasn't that way when I graduated.

Im also one of those who think it is those coming into this country that should learn enlgish and not Americans who should having to learn their language. The fact that it is a requirement, no matter what the benefit, has always annoyed me.

If I, as an American, moved to another country that didn't speak English I would not expect them to know English, but I also wouldn't want to have the expectation to speak their language fluently either.

I would imagine if I moved to say, Germany or Russia, it would not be demanding of me for their people to expect me to know their language rather than make them learn english so that I won't be inconvinienced.......just silly. We used to have a neighbor from Mexico whose mother had been here since the 40's and she didn't know a word of english because she was still sheltered by her culture (only spoke to mexicans, watched spanish lang. tv, only went to spanish speaking stores, etc.) it was quite tragic as she would be screwed if something happened to her or her family.

This is incorrect. You are not REQUIRED to learn another language in the US. That being said, most colleges and universities require some competency with a second language in highschool or courses at the college level for a Bachelor's degree. That being said, the second language doesn't have to be Spanish. Many of my friends took French classes, others took Italian and German. And as to duxup's point- I've found VERY few uses for anything I studied in my Spanish language classes. Its nice to believe that it has extra benefits but I doubt it is worth spending years in class for very limited application outside directly using the language. I would have been much better off with a computer science course or business, etc.

I think if someone moves to another country they should live by that countrys laws and customs and I personally would try to learn their language. I don't see how being forced to learn another language benifits everyone tho.

No high school requires you to learn a 2nd language. Some colleges require that you did to get admitted but you don't need to go graduate HS.

If you live in a society you must learn how to communicate with your neighbours. People who enter your country should try their best to integrate into the society. I don't think immigrants should be perfectly fluent, but they should at least be able to hold up a conversation and/or try to learn the language.

It goes by state. In NJ you must take another language unless you're already in the stupid kid classes.

Ah, that makes more sense. I was going to say, I graduated High School in North Dakota and we weren't required to take a second language. We were told it would help to get into certain colleges as others have said here, so most of us did anyway. I took a couple years of French. I can call myself a pineapple now but that's about it.

What I find worse is that so many companies/brands have started catering to these none english speaking Americans. I view myself as a liberal but I think Im very conservative when it comes to most things involving immigration and I have never understood this whole language situation. Although many countries teach english, that doesn't mean if I were to move to a foreign language country that I should expect them to speak/learn english or label their products in english. It would be up to me to learn their language and not the other way around and I think the same should apply in the US. If you move here you should either learn english or go on living without knowing english but don't expect us to know yours.

Oh, by the way, schools that force you to learn another language don't do it because of immigrants, they do it because it will actually help you in the real world. Here in France, you're forced to learn French, and two other languages minimum (Usually english + german or spanish). You can also learn Greek/Latin/Hebrew/Russian as a third language. It can be incredibly useful depending on what you want to do later on.

This sums up how I feel about the whole thing. If you're planning on moving to the US learn enough English to at least hold a job. I don't expect you to be fluent but it is a real pain when I have to ask a translator to tell you to get the forklift and move some boxes from point A to point B.

I take a free market attitude on this. Don't hire someone who can't speak English if its going to be a problem; its all an issue of labor supply and demand.

Do you mean required? in my Province (NB, Canada) everyone has to take some form of french, but there's core (which is just extrememly basic french, like they're probably still learning "the dog lives in the barn" in grade 11...but I was in immersion, so I'm fully bilingual

In Holland we have to learn English, French, and German, so stop crying. Learning another language, or at least its basics, is good for your general development. Besides, English is not even the official language of the United States.

As far as I know, it USUALLY isn't required in the US for students to take a language in high school. This may differ from school to school, but overall it is not a requirement. However, a lot of colleges/universities require applicants to have two or more years of a language in high school. I took Latin from 8th grade to 12th grade and it was honestly the best decision of my life.

Man that's rough. I took 2 years of Spanish anyway though. My college didn't even require it though. What a waste of time. :P
