The man did have a Christian background. But he did not fallow the teachings of Jesus Christ . No where in mat mark luke or john did he say to kill the jews. He said "love thy enemy" not kill thy enemy .

To say he is a Christian is like you saying you a vegetarian while eating a steak . Many atheists and converts have a Christian background does that still make them one? no it does not make them one .

You can call him what ever you want. But he in no way even remotely acted like one their for he is not a Christian . I don't care that he called him self one. There are people who say "i am a doctor" that do back ally boob jobs but they never got a medical degree .

Hitler used whatever was convenient to his agenda at the time. Sometimes it was Christianity, sometimes not.

Just because someone doesn't follow the beliefs of a religion, doesn't mean they can't ascribe themselves to it. What about all those fundamentalist "Christians" in the US who are highly intolerant of anyone but other heterosexual Christians? Intolerance is not a Christian moral, yet they practice it and call themselves "Christian" because they believe in Jesus Christ.

HitIer ascribed to Christianity and was quoted as saying he was "doing the work of God." Thus, he is a Christian. He may not have been a good Christian, but he was still a Christian.

Would you turn around and say atheism is bad because Mao and Stalin were atheists?

The popes who supported the crusades weren't following his teachings in the same manner. Were they not christians either? I think it's pretty clear to anyone that how Christians act and how Jesus said they should act are two completely and utterly different things.

Well I think the difference is that Hitler didn't ascribe himself to Christianity. It's true that a Christian isn't defined by whether or not he follows the Bible teachings to the letter, but you probably know that Hitler used religion as a tool to manipulate the German people.

Hitler at various points, at least publicaly, embraced Christianity (probably understand that the majority of Germans were Christian, and he'd at least have to talk the talk to get their support), and at other points rejected it as "Jewish dogma".

Well, it's been my observation lately that atheists are stuck-up, sanctimonious, pseudo-philosophers who consider themselves intellectually superior to the 96% of people on Earth who believe in some sort of deity.

Is that fair?

If that is what you have observed then I can't argue with it.

I didn't know there was an agreed-upon percentage of deists that atheists declared themselves superior to. :P

Hitler wanted Christianity to die. He was not Christian...didn't like Christianity....considered it weak.....but certainly was not going to tell the people he wanted to support him that. You might read up on his private views on the ideology.

And according to evangelists or other fundamentalists a huge percentage of professed Christians arent really Christians.

At some point one should decide who they consider a "true" Christian and not play difficult only when labeling someone as "non-Christian" suits the reputation of their beliefs.

Not that I believe it should affect the reputation of Christianity but for what other reason would you TC want to make that point?

To be Christian one has to follow Christ....which means his teachings. Thus, you can call yourself what you want but if you don't follow the teachings...you're not Christian.

Eh. I think its silly anyways. The very fact anyone is trying to claim that Hitler was/was not a Christian, or Stalin was/was not an atheist isn't the underlying intention of the debate anyways... it has to do with people wanting to show the religion/non-religion in a positive or negative light, implying that since Hitler was a Christian" that somehow makes all Christians, or the Christian religion, bad.

Whether he was Christian or not is not what we should be discussing here. What should be discussed is how he was a bad person, and how people like him should be prevented from gaining any political power in the future.

I don't think the German people were overly concerned with religion at the time, as the Communist party had almost equivocal in support during the late 20s (I assume the Communists were anti-religion, although I'll check on that).

Imagine that....a politician wanting to be elected keeping his secrets to himself in order to cull favor with the population he wished to impress for votes. I suggest reading his personal correspondence on the subject. He stated otherwise.

I don't think it matters. I doubt his religious faith (or lack of it) had any influence on his decisions during his rule.

You can pick out quotes like "I believe today that I am acting in the sense of the Almighty Creator. By warding off the Jews I am fighting for the Lord's work." [Reichstag 1936] which suggest he was Christian (or religious at least).

But then again you can pick out quotes like this "National Socialism and religion cannot exist together.... The heaviest blow that ever struck humanity was the coming of Christianity. Bolshevism is Christianity's illegitimate child. Both are inventions of the Jew. The deliberate lie in the matter of religion was introduced into the world by Christianity.... Let it not be said that Christianity brought man the life of the soul, for that evolution was in the natural order of things." [Taken from Bormann's notes during his time as Hitler's secretary] which suggest he hated Christianity.

Like I said, it doesn't matter. Even if he was Christian, it doesn't change anything.

You misunderstand what the "No True Scotsman Fallacy" implies, sir.

Simple example of the aforementioned fallacy-->

Teacher: All Scotsmen enjoy haggis.

Student: My uncle is a Scotsman, and he doesn't like haggis!

Teacher: Well, all true Scotsmen like haggis. A Person of Note

If he believed in God then by definition he was Christian.

Wether you follow the ten commandments however simply dictates if you are a good christian or not.

Jewish people and Muslims believe in God. They are not Christian. It does not follow. None the less, he did not like Christianity. He did not ascribe to the teachings and looked forward to the death of the religion. He does not seem to self identify as Christian...good or bad.

Actually, Hitler and the nazis were Catholic.

That's why Italy was an ally to them, to get control over the pope at the time.

Um, no.

Do I even really need to explain this one? Seriously?

What a rather odd thing to post in this thread, given the thing that Hitler is most known for...
