The Unites States has paid $50,000 in compensation for each Afghan killed in the shooting spree attributed to a U.S. soldier in southern Afghanistan, an Afghan official and a community elder said Sunday.

The families of the dead received the money Saturday at the governor's office, said Kandahar provincial council member Agha Lalai. Each wounded person received $11,000 Lalai said. Community elder Jan Agha confirmed the same figures.

They were told that the money came from U.S. President Barack Obama.

Story here.

What a joke - Obama gave it. The taxpayers footed that, it wasn't Obama's money.

I don't get it, are you mad because you think its too much money for taxpayers to pay, or because you think its too little for the cost of a human life?

That's not a joke, that's a sign of compassion and apology. Taxpayers founded the war, why should they stop founding when it's up to take the consequences? This shows that Obama is willing to take responsibillity for all the agony the U.S. have caused innocent civilians, you should respect him and nothing less!

Housing, food, water, drugs, hookers, etc.

I think what it's spent on varies on the person. I don't think it's relevant anyway.

How about the cost of daily living? The wives of the deceased men have no husband anymore that works and brings food on the table.

Most of the time they just take our money and throw it down the toilet with little to no accountability, at least in this case the expenditure is justified.

$50,000 is less than the average american household earns in ONE YEAR. That and the cost of living over there is much lower (I'm assuming) so I'm geussing that they want this to last awhile.

Actually its less the average American households brings around $42,000 a year.

Also rememeber Afganistan doesnt have a running water or power system so $50,000 is alot of money.

They get $50,000 ONCE, not yearly or biyearly or otherwise. The widows of those men have to do with $50,000 for the rest of their lives.

Even so, people don't want money...they want stability and peace in the region. They want their infrastructure back that was bombed to smithereens by America. They want their schoolbuildings back that was demolished in "collateral damage". They want a constant source of power and water. They want the basic stuff back that we all take for granted, not money they don't have much to spend on anymore.

Well, paying Jizyah is the better choice between having a war crime on your nation's record. This is how Muslims resolve unlawful killing. Either by enforcing the law, or being compensated to the families of the deceased.

edit: wait no wtf, I meant Diyah. :|

While militant factions are indoctrinating your children into their war, breeding more hate in order to become fodder for american bullets and bombs...yeah you should go out and work and abandon your children in war times. It's not as easy for a woman to work in afghanistan, it's a complicated mess, a large part of the women are illiterate. Don't compare your cozy america with war-trotten afghanistan.

The families deserve compensation. more importantly they deserve justice. if this was World War II or Korea he would have been stood up before a firing squad and giving a summary execution on the spot just as he deserved for killing those civilians. our job was always to protect civilians and make them feel safe. not to make them feel afraid of the military who are supposedly there to protect them. there is not any excuse for that.

i don't see the problem either. the president speaks and acts on behalf of you as americans (assuming you are), you voted for him to do that. are you suggesting obama should have gone door to door, chipped in himself and divided that among the victims and their families with a list of names with everyone who contributed?

Then do something about the fallacy of generocity and democracy in your own country (assuming you're living in America). Elect someone else next time, someone who will actually end wars instead of starting them.

It was the right thing to do. We should even go so far as to pay the families of all the innocent civilians we've killed while running military operations to take out terrorists.

Obama has $10.1 Billion in foreign military aid in the defense budget.

You need to understand how spending works. The money is already allocated for a specific use. Whether or not he compensates these victims, doesn't change the fact that 10.1 billion is spent. It's not like "if he didn't compensate, we save $50,000" There is no "saving" because the United States already spent 10.1 billion on aid beforehand. If the entire budget isn't used, then maybe it will be lowered on the NEXT fiscal year but right now, that 10.1 billion is a done deal.

How it's spent is up to Obama. The military is ultimately his responsibility. I'm not the one getting fingers pointed at for the actions of the military. So I think it makes sense for him to get credit for a decision he made, on an issue he's responsibile for.

[QUOTE="SPYDER0416"]

I don't get it, are you mad because you think its too much money for taxpayers to pay, or because you think its too little for the cost of a human life?

Crediting the president is the problem, it wasn't his money to give. What should have been done was to credit the people.

Once you pay your taxes, that money is no longer yours. It now belongs to the Government. If you purchased a burger at McDonalds and they then used that money to buy toilet paper, you can't argue saying you didn't want them to spend that money on toilet paper.

In other words-Blood Money.conistant
More like reparations. Blood money is usually profit made off of the suffering of others. Like the diamond trade.
