After four years of high school, I need to know this.

Is it easier to be more social when in college, or is it about the same as high school?

Well in high school you have all these different groups of people to deal with. In college, you choose your program and there's more of a chance to meet people more like you who have taken the same program.

Common misconception, most of them still haven't grown up and there are still the same "cool kids" etc...pisses me right off. Sometimes i just think "wtf am i doing here"

I would say so you'd be surprised at how much beer can make you social around a bunch of people you dont know.  that is how i met 9/10 of my freinds in college at parties and stuff.

theres always gonna be people like that, I haven't encountered much of those people, like frat boys etc.  I should have added "in my college" to my post.

It is NOT necessarily ANY easier to be sociable in college. If you live in a dorm, you'll probably have more chances, but there are loners even in dorms; believe it or not. You have to be proactive and talk to people if you want to make friends.

Same, pretty much. You're more likely to find your own clique in college, but you still have to make an effort.

depends on the inherant legality of them. If they are legal for those over 21 then its easy.

May be a bit more difficult to get your hands on illegal substances, but you still could i'd assume.

Everyone's nicer at college (except fratboys), but they still hold their preconceived notions about people.  They just try very hard not to show it.  So yes, you could say that it's not the social mess it was in high school.

As for substances, getting alcohol or beer is easy, especially if you have a 21-year old in your area of the dorm, like I did.  Everything else depends strictly on where you go.  Some regions are just kinda dry for that type of thing.  I knew two pot dealers in my entire dorm, which had 250 people in it.  And that's all they sold, nothing else.

its way harder to be social. but if you get a friend who has a fake id at least then you will be cool on your dorm floor... well maybe not cool, but people will want to know you b/c you have an ID

If you were unsocal in high school, you will be in college too. Even moreso, because there isn't any much forced groupwork that makes you get acquainted with people. Yet on the other hand there arent cliques, so you will get along with everyone in a strange neutral and informal way.

Unless you are a crazy frat boy or you live in a very crowded dorm. Which if you are on GS, you likely won't.

Well its way easier to be yourself. Yes, there are people who will have that high school attitude, but there will be way more people who are just like you. Safety in numbers!

it was a joke. you said that you lived close to your home, not to your school. a home is a place where you live, so it makes sense that you live close to it.

Depends on your situation. I go to a huge university, so I think it's easier. You never run into the same people generally, so there's no cliche's or anything, or a social ladder. Just everyone seems alot cooler in college. Not to say that there aren't pricks still... *cough*fratboys*cough*

how easy is to get um "substances" in college?rrric

Yes, if you must know, college would be a time to get your hands on some illicit substances and wreck your education. There are substances everywhere. Hell my in my neighbor's room. The real hardcore drug scenes are at Co-op's though (basically large houses shared by 10-12 students off campus.) In the dorms the penalty is too high, most people aren't stupid enough to do hardcore drugs on campus, just alcohol and pot (I would never do that on campus tho.)

With that said, I don't condone or use illicit drugs anyway...

The sad thing is that ther's no way to rate a party school. And the playboy arcticle (I just read it) makes frat parties sound like something they're not.

"Even if you're too shy to hook up with a stranger, grab a plastic cup and head to one of the dozens of frat parties being thrown on Thursday nights."

Umm if any of you have ever been to a frat party, they first don't let you in unless your group has a girl to guy ratio of 3 to 1, otherwise you might actually compromise their ability to find a drunk girl that doesn't care if she's you-know-what'ed. Then if you do get in, it's just a massive cockfight.

A good party is a dorm party or co-op party, off the record. You get a handful of friends and hang out. Sometimes it gets out of control, but it's never about picking up drunk chicks and taking advantage of them. It's just about hanging out and having fun.

In high school, people tend to run in packs, and don't socialize with people that are deemed "outcasts/losers" by the so called cool people. In college it disappears.

I agree, and for that reason I'm not too big into the frat parties.  The ideal type of party depends on the situation.  Sometimes you just want a smaller thing with a bunch of your closest friends, and other times huge parties can be cool too.  At a big school such as Penn State and a whole lot of other schools, you can have both depending on the type of mood you're in.  If you want to study on a Friday night, thats a viable option to you and you will find others doing the same thing.  If you want to go rockclimbing, thats a viable option for you, and again, you will find others doing the same thing.  If you want to get drunk by noon on a Tuesday, that too is an option for you, and I'm sure that there will be other people who want to do the same thing.  Going back on topic, I definately think it's easier to be social in college.  Granted, you do need to make somewhat of an effort to get to know people, but for the most part, people don't worry too much about how 'cool' you are as long as you respect them.

Well my friends that went to a CC all pretty much thought it was just like high school especially if it's close to where you went to high school.

I really recomend against getting an apartment for CC when you live pretty close.  Either commute and save up the cash you would be spending on an apartment, or get a loan and start off w/ the 4 year school.

There's also the option of looking at international schools.  I found a bunch of colleges that had much lower tuition, and lower living expenses outside the US.  If you can stand living really far away in a strange new place it's a great experience that is much better than college.

In general, people seem more open, and teachers really seem just like students. The relationship "can be" very great with classmates, you'll probably even have study groups out side of class a lot of the time.

But then there is me, i like to be alone and i haven't made any new friends, and i'm going on to my 2nd year in college.  The friends i have are the ones i've had for most of my life.

I think less. In high school you are all struck there so you make the best of a bad situation and talk to people (like talking to your cellmate in prison), but in college everyone just does their own thing and doesn't really talk much. Which is fine by me cause I don't talk to people I don't know anyways.

Collage is harder to socialize because most of the students are into their studies, already have friends from HS (why make more?), people are always on their cells making it hard to come up to them and talk.

In general I'd say yes if you stay in the dorms. Even so you have to make an effort to make it work.

I went to Virginia Tech last year, I'm fairly positive that it's way up there in terms of party schools.  Before classes had even started, two kids had gotten alcohol poisoning.  95% of the student population was getting drunk on the weekends, and about 80% of them stuck to hard liquor...and on top of that, VT is the number one contributor to collegehumor.com, as stated by their webmasters.Edit:  St. Patty's Day, three of my friends were doing Irish Car Bombs in the middle of chemistry class, and the teacher just kept going.

i gotta agree, you go in with wanting to make lots of friends and have a good time it'll happen just with the people you hang around, although i still would rather party with my high school friends... i just know them better
